I saw a discussion here quite some time ago about the Zinab fanning deck. If you would like to see the deck in action and don't mind waiting for the video to load, you can see my card manipulation routine which includes the Zinab deck at:
http://members.cavtel.net/parmenides/cardmanip.mov A lot of people dismiss fanning deck routines as more juggling than magic, but what can be more magical than a deck of cards that can be fanned and shown blank on both sides and then changing it to a full deck of 52 cards with a colorful back design that changes color? I sometimes use a Zinab deck to introduce a series of close-up card tricks. Before I bring it out, I take out an artist's palette with various colors on one side, explaining that "I am a sleight of hand artist." Then I show the deck blank on both sides. I touch a wand first to the colors on the palette and then I touch the deck to make the colors appear on the back. I fan the faces blank and flip the palette over to show a collage of miniature cards. I touch the wand to the miniature cards and then to the deck and the faces appear. In some ways the Zinab deck is like a Nudist/Mental Photography deck without the rough-and-smooth principle. To the best of my knowledge, the deck is no longer being made, although I have seen it on eBay. In my collection of fanning decks I have a similar deck from Italy which is, curiously, poker-sized rather than bridge-sized. Does anyone else collect fanning decks? At some point I hope to set up a web page of scans of the various fanning decks I've collected over the years. Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Yes, I collect fanning decks. Unfortunately I am also trying to get my hands on some of those out-of-print decks.

Hi Sonny,
Many years ago I bought your card manipulation from Denny Haney at Denny's. You do a great job of manipluation. Thanks for sharing the video. Lou |

Sweet! Thanks for sharing!
Even if card fanning was "just" so much card juggling it is a beautiful thing to watch when done skillfully! It makes for a great interlude in almost any show. While I don't collect fanning decks I have about a dozen out of print decks in my various boxes! I still use an old Abbott’s bought "ZBB" deck (bought 20 of them back in the day early 60's and am now down to my last one). They were bridge size.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

Lou,
I stopped distributing the card manipulation instructional video after Jeff McBride came out with his three volume set, which is excellent. I think, though, that there is still some valuable information in it that wasn't covered in Jeff's series. And as you mentioned--that was many years ago. ----- Sonny

Harry,
I have one of the ZBB decks in my collection, too. For those unfamiliar with what Harry is talking about, the ZZB stands for "Zina B. Bennett." The ZBB deck has no regular faces. You can get eight different fan displays that way. And Harry's right. Done well, a routine of exhibition card fans (thank you, Goodlette Dodson) can be very entertaining. Joe Cossari's routine with black light was truly innovative. Did anyone acquire the rights to Joe's entire act? I know he put a fanning deck on the market, but the black light act was unique. ----- Sonny
