Is the Black Tiger Deck really all that great. I wanted to know.

Yes, it is. I recall a scientific graph clearly demonstrating the relationship between one's coolness/expertise and using a Black Tiger deck. You have to possess serious chops because merely busting these out will cause jaws to drop. Bam- there's your first effect. Remember, you have to "bust" them out. There's a difference between "busting" and "removing" (or "taking"), and if this subtle but crucial distinction is lost on you, then you should try collecting stamps.

Depends on what you want to do? if you want to do card flourishes and XCM I would buy them..just a little aesthetic effect..but for closeup I w ould just use regular cards...the audience wont think their trick cards..and whats wrong with a normal deck?

Well, sure. I mean, what's cooler than a black tiger? Only, like, a black tiger with a gun.
They should make black-tiger-with-a-gun cards.

Pc1113, I'll tell you about the Black Tiger deck, but first I want to get something off my chest.
(Rant on!) I'm a middle-aged philosopher, which means I means I'm about a 7 on the uncool Richter scale. And I like the Black Tiger deck. It is what it is. I could care less whether people here think me "cool" or not. Those who immediately start pouring on the sarcasm every time someone mentions the Black Tiger deck need to ask themselves why they care so much. When I wear my hat into town (the one in my avatar) I invariably get laughed at by many of the fine youth of our fair town. They laugh and point and talk loudly about the "cowboy". I wear it anyway, and will continue to wear it. I think my hat is cool. They don't. Fair enough. But why do they laugh? Why do they care so much? I happen to think that everyone who wears his baseball cap with the bill over to the side looks like a village idiot. But I realize that they, within their own subculture, look cool. I do not laugh, and I do not ridicule them in internet forums (except for just now). Because, while I think they look silly, I actually don't give a ***. (Rant off.) So pc1113: the Black Tiger deck, as I said, is what it is--a black Bicycle deck which looks cool (especially when I'm wearing my hat). The quality is no better than any other deck of Bikes, though they are just a wee bit thicker. The one big negative is that the black wears off of the sides of the cards after an hour or two's use. The biggest positive is that they look great under a blacklight. I like them much better than the much higher priced Vipers, but a lot less than the Ghosts. I LOVE the Ghosts, which look even better under blacklight. As far as the "trick deck" argument goes, stick around here at the Café and get out and perform some magic and make up your own mind. I've said many times, and will continue to say, that this argument may hold water in many or even most places in the U.S., but nowhere else. Use the cards you like and feel comfortable with. I have NEVER, here in Germany, been accused of using gaffed cards. (Rant on again.) As you get older and wiser and more self-confident, you'll learn there are some things you don't need to ask anyone's advice on. I use Black Tigers and Ghosts and wear a cowboy hat. Tom Wolfe wears a white suit. Elvis wore a jump suit with a belt buckle the size of dinner plate. Bill Palmer has an avatar in which he wears a cup on his head. We are all cool. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Just straighten up your baseball cap and pull your pants up, for cryin' out loud! Jeff |

Well as I had started in card magic,i bought 6 black tiger decks.
Now iam left with 2 sealed packs and one allready open pack. I rarely use them for card magic because during all the shuffle work (especially faros) will peel of the black ink on the edges and then they just look ugly. Even if just 2-3 cards having lost a bit of the ink on the back or at the corners, when you do a fan its pointing directly into your eyes. Same applies to the MagicMakers Decks (Red,Yellow,Black. If you want "extraordinary" looking cards,go for the ghost deck or any other oddbacked deck of bikes (League Back,Vintage etc). |

I like the cards. People complain that's it the young tenens who know nothing about magic who use them, and that may be true for the most part. But that doesn't detract from the fact that the Black Tiger deck is attention grabbing as well as asthetically pleasing. The cards are above the quality of most bicycle decks, and while undoubtedly overpriced, they (Along with Ghosts, Vipers, and Masters) do make for a nice change from the cheap $1 bicycle decks at Sam's Club.
Are the cards worth the price tag? That depends on personal opinion. But there's no denying that they are a refreshing change from the usual. Thanks, Shane Wiker |

I have a Ghost deck that I carry around. I like to start by performing a "half-bust" (much like a full busting out of the cards, but only half way) which I immediately follow with a dramatic "Have you ever seen cards like these before?" The answer is usually, of course not! These are magical cards, see? They come out of the box without ink on the faces... <routine continues>
Of course, sometimes the spec says "yeah, I saw 'em on Ellusionist" and then you know exactly who you're dealing with. Seriously, that happened to me a couple of weeks ago at the market where I perform. Turns out he was a hobbyist magician passing through town. His friends identified him as "the expert" beforehand, I should have paid more attention. Anyway, to make a long story short... Ghosts are sweet, but I try not to overuse them... don't wanna make them seem "ordinary" nor do I want to wear them out too soon. That's what my red bikes are for! |

The Black Tiger decks are not something I would use, because they don't fit my style.
It may be that for the appropriate performer, they may be a good fit. It depends on your performing style, and the audiences you work in front of. As far as whether or not they are "better" for performing, an acquaintence let me handle a deck to see how they were, and I honestly didn't notice any special qualities other than the way they were printed. At $7 a deck US, when regular Bikes can be had around a buck a deck, The Black Tiger deck seems to be best for performing "Coins Across"---from the pockets of magicians to the coffers at Ellusionist.com Don

The Black Tiger deck is made with a higher quality finish than normal bikes. Plus, they look snazzy. If you like them, check them out, it's really up to you. : )

The black Gaff ace of spades for the Black Tigers is as cool a card as you will ever find. For my pirate character, this makes the most amazing card to start my Mac Aces routine with. Since I am doing this out doors (without fear of black light) I have doctored them witha sharpie when they age....

Talk about attracting undo and unwanted attention! Magicians are always concerned about using recognizable everyday objects if at all possible. Why blow it with with such a weird looking deck of cards that will only draw suspicion? ~gaffed~

Several people have suggested the aesthetic appeal of the cards, but the way I see it is effects involving changes or reversals are weakened since the contrast is not strong enough for the effect to quite register. ‘Twisting the Aces’ or ‘Reset’ would just be utter confusion! How about having a card signed? Would black cards even be possible to see in a dark club or from a stage? Unless your only audience (?) is your webcam I would suggest you take into consideration where you will be performing and what effects you would like to perform.

I recieved the Ghost Deck/Black Tiger and some other black Ellusionist deck as a gift. I played around with one of the decks for awhile but ultimately decided to leave them in the drawer. Also when using them, it was almost like you had to convince the audience that it was a 'normal' deck before you could even start a trick because they were already making comments like "Is that normal deck? They look funny! Can I see them?" Whereas the red backed bikes never raisee suspicion. |

I bought two masters decks a while back, one red and one blue. The cards never seem to lose the slippery finish so that you can always produce a perfect fan. Also the cards are stronger so the only reason to throw them out within the first month would be for stained faces. I do not believe that they are worth the price, however CW

I bought one of the old nasty looking decks to do haunted deck with.
I have a deck of Black Tigers a friend gave me and they are cool, but I never use them. I use the regular 808 red bikes for performing and that's it. My favorite cards of all time are tally ho fan backs. I think they are the best you can buy. Most likey more info than you wanted. |
