I'm curious about the OTHER side of this question. How do you feel when people see you as a magician, and ask, "What else do you do? Do you have another job?"
Is the implication that you can't be good unless you are full-time? Even though almost all entertainers had "day jobs" until they hit it big (and who's to say that they were any less talented when they were waiting tables?), do you think people think less of your abilities if you are a part-timer? |

I think there is a general perception in the public that unless you are doing stage illusions with white tigers and dancing assistants that you can't be making any real money.
I'm full time (with neither tigers, assistants, or a spouse with a "real job") and just this summer as I left a library show a man asked me "Can you really make a living doing this?!" The question was not asked in an admiring tone. It was more sympathetic, like we was implying that I might finish the show and dig through the trash can for empty soda cans to recycle for spare change. |

I often get people who try to negotiate my fee down by saying I'll be able to eat with the group ... as if I'm a starving artist and a piece of banquet chicken's gonna sway my fee structure!

How many empty soda cans did you gather?
