Hey guys, I was just wondering if there are any magi here who share my interest in "indie music". For those of you who have no idea what this genre is, it's a bit tough to explain. It used to represent fringe bands who weren't mainstream and were instead on "independent" labels, but now it kind of refers to a style of music, usually very distinct from what you would hear on the radio. I'll point you to this link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_(music)
Anyway, what are some of your favorite bands? I love some of the more well-known bands, such as Belle and Sebastian, The Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, etc... Some newer favorites of mine are Sunset Rubdown ( http://www.myspace.com/sunestrubdown listen to the fourth song, "Shut Up I am Dreaming..."), Tilly & the Wall, and Panda Bear (That guy from Animal Collective, listen to "Comfy in Nautica" http://www.myspace.com/rippityrippity ) Anyway, I was just curious about other people's favorites . |

Its really hard to talk about "indie" music in my opinion. Things I consider indie are usually thought not to be and when people give examples of indie music they like, I've never heard of it. (as in your examples.)
One band I like a lot that I consider Indie is Kind of Like Spitting. I also like Lemuria (sometimes) which is cool cause they did a split CD. One of my favorite bands ever (and I consider them Indie although I'm sure many would argue that) is The Promise Ring. I also like Jawbreaker and Built To Spill but don't really know if they qualify. Older indie is much better. I remember when Tool used to be considered indie.
Some of its ok...but most of its like just pop, but renamed cause they can play instruments. Aren't belle and Sebastian now called bellx1? M:C |

I like some of the bands you mentioned and tons of other stuff. The term "indie music" is so broad, I think, to be kind of useless in figuring out whose tastes you match up to.
