I am a new user, so I hope this post is not too repetitive. If you want to start in Mentalism, does anyone have a list of books or tricks that you should start with?
I see ads for clipboards, chalk boards, etc., but what is the standard that people use (like a stripper deck is a standard, great trick deck)? What is the core collection for a mentalist? What books, DVDs, and tricks do they own? Thanks, Jeff |

When I first started coming here a few years back, I had the same question. I was told Corinda's book "13 Steps of Mentalism" was the one to get. I did. And it is a good book that covers the basics of mentalism despite the presentation being a bit dated due to the book's age. I still read the book from time to time, and re-read certain parts. That would be a good book to start with.
Have fun! |

I am new to all of this ; so please correct me if I am wrong and be kind to guide me in the right direction.
Mentalism ; Is it were a person can manipulate the forces of nature by useing the power of the mind to control matter ; levitation, passing through objects, being cut in half, vanishing & reappearing, createing animals, objects, and people from no where, and transform an object into another ? If this is what Mentalism is, then this is what I want to learn ! I have read that these are good materials ; Corinda : 13 steps to mentalism. Anneman : Practicle mental effects. Richard Osterlinds : Easy to master mental miricles DVD. How about Criss Angel : Master mindfreak instructional DVD series ??? Thank You ; Python |

Just have to wait until September in order to get a different freebie DVD when I buy the next stack of stuff. Actually, my motives for for getting into this field may be a bit different from a mere desire to entertain (which I also have of course, I don't say "mere" to belittle this). I would love to be able to stop people I know from giving their money to psychics and other quacks who pray upon those who badly need some good news. Swami Noobini

As far as the link in the post above, only click on it if you want to read a bunch of bunk. A link to that type of website pops up in posts every now and then, and it's nothing but a bunch of marketing ploys (read "lies"). In fact, if you Google the name of the front man, Ryan Even, all the links (at least the ones I clicked on) in some way lead to his "Internet Marketing Blog" where he is "Helping Smart Marketers Earn More Online". You can read what others have already posted about his product here. It reminds me of another "learn magic easy from a master" site by another "marketing guru" that was brought up a little over a year ago, which you can read about here. What is it about these guys and giving everything a price of $47 dollars?

If you want to keep things simple, you can perform remarkable feats of mentalism effects with just an ordinary deck. As you progress, you may also want to learn Osterlind's Breakthrough Card System and the Aronson Stack. Good luck and have fun!

First, I am not a mentalist. But I do some mental effects in my magic shows. Most of the people that call themselves mentalists don't really like magic, or at least see it as something very different. And, most mentalists are very cautious about using playing cards in their work. They feel that no matter what they do, that it will be thought of as a "card trick" by the spectators. Many mentalists will not use regular playing cards at all. They do, however, use ESP Cards.
Mentalists do not usually claim supernatural powers, but they usually do not deny having them either. They would prefer to allow the spectators to believe what they wish. Some come very close to claiming "psychic" abilities and a few actually do. (Uri Geller, for example.) As a magician, I use mental magic, but am very careful to avoid the idea that I'm a psychic. I feel that this is form of deception I don't want to get into. A surprising number of people actually believe that psychic powers and extra-sensory-perception are a reality and even are accepted by scientists. Most scientists are still very skeptical or just outright don't believe it at all. I certainly don't... but then magicians are in a unique situation. We go to club meetings and conventions, and over the years will see a lot of things done that we cannot explain. But, in most cases, we eventually find out how the illusion is created and know that just because we don't understand something we see, that it is by no means proof that supernatural powers do exist. This process makes us VERY skeptical about accepting the "supernatural." To Python: your definition of mentalism covers only one part of what mentalists do. In fact, the illusions you mention are mostly magic tricks, and most mentalists stress the conveying of information "telepathically" as the core effect of mentalism. That means they read people's minds, receive information they could not know like information in an unopened book, foretell the future, and possibly control simple choices made by volunteers during their show. The effects you mention fall under the category of "psychokinesis." This is the supposed power of the mind to affect the physical world. Generally the effects are the bending of metal, causing objects to move by sliding on a table, the ability to stop watches, etc. Mentalists do not usually levitate things, particularly people, because that's a common magic trick and they work hard to differentiate themselves from magicians. Hope my random thoughts are helpful, or at least of interest. Dennis Loomis
