So I have contacted a few resturants in my area. At least half of them say no because they wants bands. I tell them that every other resturarnt is having bands and this is something differnt. The gm's love the idea and think they should go with it but the owners want bands. Is anyone else having this? IF so what are you doing to fix it or are you? Just thought that I would ask.

Not enough info. You have to question them a bit to find out the "Why's" ... and talk to the owners if you can rather than the GM if that's where the problem lies.
Why do they want a band? What is the goal of having one? Why might they want you? Do you solve the same problems a band is solving? What is their clientelle? Is a band more fitting for their establishemnt? Why or why not? There is so much we need to know to answer this. Maybe they just want background ambience that the entire place can enjoy rather than a one-on-one thing. You won't know until you dig deeper. |

Yes...not enough information.
Also, what kind of restaurants are you talking to? I don't know of very many at all that have bands. Just (hopefully) good food. Mark. |

I gotta admit, I'm not familiar with a lot of restaurants featuring bands, matter of fact I can't think of one other than a Mex place with a mariachi band.

The Buffalo Wild Wings here in Lawrence has a band. There are a few bar and grills that tend to have bands play regularly, I would imagine that some would have house bands.

Yeah, but then again Kansas City conjurs up images of blues so a band makes sense. I would also expect music in Nashville.

Why can't they have a band AND a magician? Sell yourself to management so that even THAT idea sounds golden. Maybe some people aren't interested in the music? Maybe some people like more intimate attention? By having a magician there, you can work the waiting area on a busy night, to keep people from leaving.
Just a couple of thoughts...Good luck! Steve |

My experiece is that a restaurant's entertainment budget will keep most of them from hiring a band and a magician. I've had the opportunity to work special events like St. Patricks Day and Cinco De Mayo at restaurants that featured both but not a regular weekly gig.

Bands keep people in more (I tend to stay for the four hours some bands play, as do many other patrons), which means selling more drinks. Performing magic while a band is up is exceptionally difficult, and boy have I tried. Performing when the band isn't on isn't too effective. Not to say that it can't be done. A friend of mine performed at a bar kind of place. When I went to see him, there was a band too. He would perform one thing between the set breaks. I believe he got a small cut of the cover charges. It probably wasn't too cost effective for him though. Why can't you sell management on both? No reason. Go to the venue you would like to perform at with some friends, on your preferred night. See how the place gels when the band is on, try showing your friends some magic there, if you can make it work, then sell yourself to the manager. Josh |

Another note no one has mentioned is that I highly doubt they all want bands 7 days a week:) Talk to them about a Wednesday or Thursday night.
I am also suprised to hear of this many "restaurants" that want bands.

Well most of the resturant that I wokr are a high class bar and grill. They do only have money in the budget for one not both. Most of the resturants also are like a classie hang out for after work singels. They are great places to work but this band thing is just bugging me. Thank you for all of the help.

Ohhh...the bands are in the bars. No offense but when I went to clubs I would have prefered a band to a magician 100%, sorry. Let's face it, you can't slow dance to an ambitious card routine.

Team up with a D.J. and sell the Package. If the bar doesn't have Music it's screwed. Find some one that would suit the place bring him with you.

It is not that there are bands already and they are not dancing bars. they are bar and grills. kinda like a up scale applebees. But they want to hire a band instead of a magician.

Plenty of other fish in the sea and once the see the benefit their competition is garnering from your services they might reconsider their opinion on having a house magician.

Pitch them that you would perform when the band is "breaking" and there is no charge for your performance. Then close strong and hit them with a hat line.
It works and you are out of there in 10-15 minutes with some $ in your pocket. |

I understand that but If you take out music as a whole the only people being entertained are the ones you are performing for at that time. The range of D.j.'s these day's is much more than what it used to be. I've hired D.J.'s for very high end events. they put together sets that fit the night.
You need to replace the group entertainment factor if you want to compete with the bands. The problem these owners probably have with hiring you is the same one I would have. Ok so now I have a Magician entertaining I have to; A) Find a D.J. to fill the Sound void. B) Have Customers feeling uncomfortable because they are overhearing each others conversation. C) Used canned music that may or may not suit my environment and I have very little control over. |
