I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to "tune up" or make the gimmick.
I'm not just hunting for secrets, but my gimmick has lost its "SNAP" shut. If anyone can help me with this mechanism, please do. Thanks, Mike |

I'm not kidding you, try a little WD40. It will soften it up a bite if it is salvageable. If not I'd like to know if you are successful in making your own gimmick.

I made my own hollow gimmick and it works great. No "snapping" or anything to worry about, just a little slight of hand and you're in business. Not tough at all. I've made at least 5 of these and think that my gimmick is better than the actual Hollow gimmick. I can show both sides of the card with the moving hole before, DURING, and after the effect. Woo!

I have a similar problem, one of the parts has worked itself loose. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix it? The stuff used to attach the gimmicked parts seems to be the same as the stuff used to attach CDs to magazine covers. No idea where you would buy it though.
Lithis, are you prepared to share your method for making the Hollow gimmick if we email you? |

I was wondering if a latex balloon might do the trick? Otherwise try a stretched piece of dental rubber dam, or some stuff from the coin through rubber trick that you probably never use any more.
I too have a broken Hollow trick. When I first received mine the gimmick had been warped in the mail and I never bothered to get it replaced. Now I'd like to make my own version also using non bicycle card stock. My problem is how to make a perfect round hole in the card without damaging the edges for the cig thru card effect (which utilises a similar idea). Where can I buy a hole puncher that punches holes the exact size of a cigarette? |

Do they offer refill gimmicks? That might be the easiest alternative.

Has anyone managed to fix the gimmick or make their own replacement card? If so could you send me details as I am really keen to repair mine. Thanks.

Wandering Magician is right, you can use a latex balloon. I made my own using the latex balloon method.

Glad to help. Hopefully that will take care of fixing the hollow gimmick ... but how do I make the correct size hole for the Cig Thru Card? It must be possible to buy the right size holepunch from somewhere. Can anyone help please?

Try to find a piece of brass or copper tube the same size as a cigarette, this will act much better than a punch as it will cut a neater hole.

Ah! A home-made hole punch. So I sharpen a piece of metal tube and bang a hole through the card with a hammer using the tube as a cutter. If that is the best and only way then thanks for the tip.

Or stack up a bunch of cards with the one you want to keep in the middle and drill a hole with right sized bit.
Worth a shot.

My gimmick doesn't snap shut, but the handling allows you to close it yourself easily and invisibly as it is, so the snap shut isn't needed. I just used regular invisible (magic) tape. That way, you can show the card all the way around, even when the holes are visible. Email me for more details, matt@linebroke.com .

Yes, filing or sharpening the tube/pipe would help. Many of these types of tubes are sold at craft stores, especially ones which handle RC cars, planes, boats etc. This type of brass tubing is generally used for cooling, exhaust, etc. (at least in RC boats). Anyway, a little work with a sharpening stone may do the trick.

As a person who works with leather, I have a large variety of punches for making holes. Two things to consider— the size, and the method of use.
Many hardware stores, and even some suto stores carry punches, sometimes they are called gasket punches. They are heavy, will not bend when whomped with a hammer, and give a fairly nice edge. Method/technique— big tip here, use a piece of wood for the backing when punching thorugh things. Turn the wood so the punch and the thing you are punching is resting on the END GRAIN. This means you see the little "specs" on the end of the wood, or the pores if you will, NOT the lines along the side! This allows the punch to NOT get dull so fast, and threrefore ruining the cut you make into your cards. Gasket punches are made to cut through papers, so they hold the edge a bit longer than some other things. They also come in many sizes.

As a professional— I made up to now at least 250 cig thru cards— I only use a custom made puncher: hardended steel and special form. And of course a second one (square form) for the flap/the counterpart. I take a hammer for punching and of course a piece of wood to lay the cards on.
Dental dam works always fine, it doesn't have to be pre-stretched. But sometimes a non-automatic version without dental dam is requested because it works smoother and is safer! It took me a long time too to find the right glue and method— but, hey...I sell my cards, so they must be somewhat good. But making a hollow gimmick...just 3 holes, or 4 or 5? It's easy. Have fun...

Hi All!!! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Glenn and I grew up in Michigan not far from Abbotts so needless to say the 'magic bug' bit many many years ago. I made all my money in H.S. performing at private & corporate parties, then in 1978 I joined the Army and I'm still in the Army. But I've never lost the love of magic and the amazement in peoples faces as the impossible happens. I also love fine woodworking and veneer work which is time consuming and very detail oriented. I said all that to say this - when it comes to the detail needed to build small illusions or big ones, I just love it with a passion. If ANYONE has any construction questions or just want to bump ideas off me please don't hesitate. I'm not out to steal anyone's ideas - I just love to build and I especially love to build magic stuff.
ALSO - in regards to how to punch precision holes in cards, take a look at http://www.woodcraft.com or http://www.penstate.com - They have parts for woodworkers who like to make pens & they have 'pen tubes' in various sizes. They are made of brass and the sizes are EXACT. I've used them in my veneer work and with a little twisting by hand or by carefully chucking on in a drill, they'll cut a PERFECT hole for you. Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble....
I LOVE magic & I love using my woodworking skills to build any type of illusion large or small.

Please accept my apologies, I misspelled one of the websites for the brass pen tubes. Here's the correct one - http://www.pennstateind.com
Check it out and Woodcraft has a cool site for all types of Fine Woodworking tools & supplies for those of you who are on a budget and like to build your own stuff.
