Rannie,
Once again you have put together a great, well thought out routine. And all in the spectators hand. Well done!

Chris Kenner has a really nice 4 (and only 4) coins across called "The Deep". It's taught on Homer Liwag's CoinOne DVD as a bonus and in his book "Totally Out of Control"

Thank you Marion, Wes and Warren! This is actually the third version of it. Some of the coin greats have been generous in guiding me through its permutations. Mike Gallo was very instrumental in pointing out its weak points as well as its strong points. This lead me to tweak on it till it was just right. I have performed this hundreds of times and it has never failed me. The intermediate to advance coin workers can get the idea. I do not think there is nothing new as far as moves are concerned.... the combination perhaps is quite unusual. Have fun.
I wish to add to the list.... Vinny "The Godfather" Marini's CROSSING THE DELAWARE. It can be found in The Godfather DVD. Regarding the use of shells and extra coins.... just my opinion... If it would help me achieve the effect , I'd use it or give it a shot. To name a few... Paul Gertners's FAMILIAR RING, there is also one by Garett Thomas, plenty from the NY Coinmen. AND if you like.... you can have a look at SENCILLO. GHAGEMAN, you did not mention if you wanted a coins across to spectator's hand, tabled, or something done in chest level. Goodluck and have fun in your quest for the CA that would fit your requirement and fancy. Rannie

I love it and agree with the comments above, it is hard to be a coins across with 4 silver dollar and the magic happening in the spectator hands and in a fair and clean way.
well done Rannie mi hermano. be well. Mano. P.S. I pmed you. |

Very nice coins across Rannie. Looked to me like the whole routine was a real test in misdirection and with the reaction of your spectators you were very successful! If I am correct the third coin across was beautifully done, because it was sitting there in her "open" hands all along and, because of your timing and great misdirection none of the spectators knew until you were ready to point it out to them. That is when I would say you know you are in control, fine job.....

Thanks Ray! This is why I believe this is a real worker. It plays even for medium sized group. I ones did this for a room of 80 people the reaction of the volonteer sends the message to the guy at the back of the hall. Yes it involves timing and misdirection, but there are certain things you just have to identify thru constant practice and application out in the real world. Once you know these signals... it becomes easier. I will send you the handling soon. The best thing about it is that you can use borrowed coins. The only downside .... at least for me , is that it seems easier for me to do it with larger coins. Well.... the effect is that... the bigger the more impossible. Oh well.... its still a plus after all.
Hey Mano mi hermano... great to hear from you. I will fly to L.A. this Sept. Fly to Washington and New York in October for a show for the Filipino Communities and back in L.A. in November. It seems like we will session in October then. I'll make sure I have a day or two for leisure. Rannie

Yes, I know what you mean about the real world Rannie. My first real performance around spectators I didn't know made me realize that real fast! I still have plenty to learn on that end, but I got a taste of it. I believe that is where experience pays off and you showed me that already. Thanks for everything Rannie, I do appreciate all the help.....

I certainly do not know everything about coin magic.... but I can safely say that I have experienced magic for some time now, both in the success department and most especially in the failure dept. As far as coin across are concerned.... more often than not, magicians would perform any given trick the way it came in the box so to speak. Patter and all. I did that in the beginning. There was a phase in my life as a coin magic lover that I sounded just like my mentor, from the snocker to the subtleties. Then there was the David Roth Phase. I mean.... I did it all. It was only in the past 6 or seven tears that I felt comfortable enough to do my own stuff, or my own combinations and patter. I had some work of my own such as the Raytrix that goes back more than 10 years ago, but I was just being too safe. Its not that the works of the great magicians who came long before me was not ggod enougfh.... NO NO NO! Most of their success came from their personality, their understanding of human signals and experience. The routines are just part of the success....
What I am saying is that in coin magic, especially the coins across plot.... the magician must be ready for every possible scenario. It is like a piece of written music that can go into an improvisational section any given point and yoyo back to the B section....so to speak. In the hundreds of performance of my coins across.... it is far and few in between that I do it exactly the same. Yes the sequence and the phases are the same, but the attackl depends on the audience at hand. Say the third phase..... by the second phase I already have a better guage of how my spectator reacts. The first 2 phases are enough to educate me. From there.... it can be smooth sailing. I am relaxed but never complacent. I have the option to do the third phase as in the demo... or resort to an alternative. It depends on how I seem to manage my spec. Its a fun excercise. There are more ways that I cast and pull my spectators gaze from here to there and back. The problem with Coins Across is its repetitiveness. Usually 4 coins right? That means 3 chances to catch you... The first is always a bonus for us. Some take so long and some take for granted the clarity part of the routine. They must know what has happened and must be misdirected before they anticipate it to happen again. These are in no way a hard and fast rule that I want to force... these are merely my observations of the coins across plot that I love so much. Rannie

You're right ran my man...All of this is a process to be sure. You have to develop the "guts" to go it alone. But "alone" is where you truly begin to understand your own creativity. It's sorta where you begin to really think and become both magi and spec, sorta where you don't buy dvds much anymore but think of making of them.
From these varying perspectives you move on into all the other stuff there is to be in this stuff. I gotta tellya, I keep learning new stuff everyday, mostly because I am no longer just a trick out of the box with instructions. I'm now on an island with just a pocketknife and cutting my own space and doing my own thing. Eventually, that's what we're all supposed to be doing in this thing called life anyway...And I suppose that this goes for coin magic too. -MB

That is true Marion... but now that I have access to materials... I do buy DVDs to expand my knowledge more. This is why if I get a move that I can apply with my ideas from a dvd, that move alone makes it worth the investment. Also fro these new dvds, I learn who to credit at times. In music, in acting and in magic, I do have isolation periods. This helps me create and be quite original. At least in my opinion. Well, even if some people think one of my routines is original....it won't matter to me if I know it is'nt. You know what I mean. Research and learning time is important too. As long as you have the ability to fight the urge to be a clone and the desire to put things together the way you ought to for yourself...then I think its a good idea to research/invest.
Just like a bar tender.... All the ingredients are out there before him. Vodkas, rhum, OJ, vermouth... etc. Who would ever think that if you mix rhum and coke...you'd have rhum coke... Vodka was traditionally drank pure...now we have vodka tonic, vodka seven etc... I believe its the same with magic. Just like a good bartender... the magician should be ready to address the needs of the customer/audience. Aside from the needs...the quirks they have and the heckling they can do. In a coins across routine, I always stress in my Manila lectures, the importance of alternative handlings and endings. For [ users., I suggest you have a look at Charlie Justice' covert coins DVD. There is one killer move that would solve the last coin problem. Rannie

Charlie sent me a note about one of his "covert" moves.
Well worth exploring. Just are quick reminder to us all... NEVER confuse the trick as seen by the audience with the methods used to make the magic work.
