Since I own lots of Axtell puppets, I found that I couldn't "voice them". At least a voice that gives them character. (I have to use Axtrax CDs).

Last year at KIdabra, I put the big bear on my arm and I COULD VOICE that one so I bought it.

Consider creating a voice character then match that character to one of the many Axtell Puppets.

This doesn't mean you are trying to be a ventriloquist, only that you have the option to create your own script or use Axtell scripts with the sound background.

I do find it difficult to imagine pulling off a tape recorded puppet. For those of you using Axtrax CD's, do you experience any difficulty in the timing? Or does it make it too difficult to "ad-lib" as they say? I'm interested as I've been interested in purchasing a few to try them out here.

Also, I'm worried about the degradation of latex over time. Any problems with this? What is the longest your Axtell puppet has held up? How many shows?

Dennis, has your bear lasted through your landslide of shows unscathed? How many shows has it gone through and does it seem to stand up in regards to latex strength?
I'd admit openly I'm also tempted by the bear, but may in fact lean towards the hippo.

As for the latex I have had my puppet for over 8 years now and use it in over 250 shows a year. Still looks great. I have had to sew some things but the latex looks great and will last long time.

The AX trax does limit you so it is hard to ad lib with those. but if the routine is going to be the same ever time there really is no need to ad lib with them. In most cases if an ad lib happens in a show and it is funny, I then try to make that same thing happen in every show and make it look like an ad lib.

I love Axtell stuff. his products are not cheap but the price you pay is WAY worth it. my Croco has made me more money than any other thing in my show.

All the best Tom

I´m going to take a ventriloquism course and ONE question I have wondering at is HOW shall I know what sort of doll I need..I´m not going to buy a doll right now just because I going to take this course... What I mean is ...How does a person who does ventriloquism know what kind of doll he or she would like to work with.. Is it up to the voice the ventriloquist uses or?

Trixy, Choosing a vent figure is not always easy. Dennis makes a great point about choosing a figure that you can match with the right voice. As far as voiceing the figure goes, that is up to you too. All you really need to do is make sure there is plenty of contrast between your voice and the figure's voice.

Dennis had trouble finding a figure that he could put a voice too that sounded right to him. The bear worked for him. The bear might not work for me, but you never know until you think it out and experiment a little.

On the other hand, voices that don't really seem to fit might create some hilarious comedy situations. Imagine that bear with a big, deep voice talking about fire safety....ala Smokey The Bear. The kids might get a clear message from a voice of authority. Now imagine that same bear talking about fire safety in a little, whimpy voice. It might be funny and comedy bits could be put in the show as to how scared the bear is of everything. Kids might get a clear message that way too. Either way, they will remember it!

Ventriloquists do need to be funny, and sometimes having a voice that sounds different from the figures appearance might help with the comedy.

There are a lot of factors that go into deciding which figure is right for you. You need to consider how you will be using it too. If you are considering a figure from Axtell Expressions you might want to get Steve Axtell's video. It shows lots of his wonderful creations and he even demonstrates voices with many of them. It might help you decide, and who knows, there may be one that "speaks" to you right away!

I am thinking of getting the Gopher, but I'm afraid he will take over the show, remember the last time the Gophers went on the rampage? I believe they even have an Anarcho Syndicalist union now.

They are funny though.

Anyone?

I recommend the methane gas version. Blows em away, and boils a kettle simultaneously.
