Who can do Tarbary's rope routine in full and to a decent standard??
I can do most of it...just the melting move I can't get very smooth. M:C |

I used to do it and I did it well I might add, but it, like many other rope routines had the problem that in the end you expose the secret. Magicians tend to think that laymen don't notice this but still it bothered me so much that in the end I dropped it out of my performing set along with other rope routines. The fact that magicians don't seem to realise is that most rope routines aren't deceptive at all. They are just used cos rope is cheap, takes little space in bag and is visible and you can easily get 5 mins out of one rope.
Of course there is exceptions, but think about it. Most rope routines either use the stupid thing where rope is cut with fingers or at one point the short piece is exposed to get one more effect out of it exposing the secret. J-M |

I do everything except the sliding knot and the jumping ends. I think the move to cover the s***t r**e is weak on the jumping ends and the sliding knot does not look convincing.

I have done the entire routine, I learned it and practiced it but never performed it, I started modifying it and mixing it with pieces from some other routines to make it my own. I agree some parts of it take a lot of practice and to be honest a little boldness to do. It works because you move with confidence and act like what you are saying and doing is true. Boldness was a big part of Harry Blackstone's (both sr and jr actually) style of magic. Some of their steals were done with pure unmitigated gall. That is one aspect of magic many fail to master. You just have to have confidence in your moves and forget all the worry about "will anybody notice".

I do a lot of tabary's moves, but I hate the part when he ask "were are the ends?, in my pocket" and he just take the S.R. from the pocket.
I always use this move to get rid of the gimmic.

I spent many, many hours learning the Tabary routine. I only performed it once at a IBM Ring Banquet, and it went over well.
I decided it was too involved for most people to follow but the hours spent learning it were not wasted, as I have adapted moves from that routine to other routines. If only I could have mastered the french accent it would have gone over even better. Andy

It is a highlight of my show, and the vast majority of my work is referral and repeat business. The fact that rope is cheap, visible, packs small and plays big is just icing on the cake. If it were costly and bulky, I'd still do my routine.

I agree with Scott. The reactions I get from spectators are great and I get more "How did you do that" for my rope routine than any other effect.

Rope rules!
If you're not getting good reactions with rope magic you might want to analyze your presentations. People still appreciate even the most basic cut and restored rope. I'm always amazed at the reaction I get, especially from young children when the rope is restored. I do, however, believe that cutting the rope with your fingers is akin to shooting yourself in the foot. Andy

Scott made a great point in saying that if it was bulky he would do the routine anyway. When doing strolling magic, my three ropes actually take up a lot of space which is the only reason I considered throwing it out of my walkaround act, but the reactions are awesome, so I decided not to. |
