Did my first restaurant in a new state tonight. It went over fairly well but it was interesting from a certain point of view. It seems that what is undertstood in one state when it came to tips and proper etiquitte changes drastically when in a different state. Anyone else find this to be true?

I'm sorry, what do you mean by a new state?

I'm from Chicago and tipping is very common. I was hired to work at some small lakeside resort in Wisconsin for a weekend. I got one tip the whole weekend. But, I was offered enough drinks ("Hey, can I buy you a drink?) to last several lifetimes. Unfortuneatly for me, I don't drink.
Plus, I found that many lines that always get a laugh here went over like a lead balloon over there. I found that odd, since it was only 4 hours away.

Right...sorry. I was living in Ca doing magic and moved to Las Vegas. I found that although this whole economy is based on tipping, the thought seemed to elude everyone at this particular venue. I did get a lot of praise and the owner said he had many inquiries about when I was returning, so I don't think it was the performance.

There are some techniques for getting people to tip you; however, you need to be very careful not to be over the top. For example, badges that say "Tip Ping is not a city in China" or "It is good luck to tip your magician" are IMHO a bit over the top. However, if you finish your set at table with a money trick, sometimes, they will get the idea that you do accept tips.

If you can plant a subliminal suggestion in their minds that tips are acceptable, it might work. Watch Derren Brown.

Bill,
I'm not a tip seeker. I do accept them, but I don't strong arm nor suggest tips. My opinions on that have been made known in other threads, ad nauseum. However, I did find the difference in behavior intriguing.

I doubt the state has anything to do with it. Just probably a different venue.

Different people, different mindset, different goals. I'm speaking of the customers, not the magician.

I never actively sought tips when I was working in restaurants. I got them, though. I know one fellow who worked restaurants for a long time here, and he actually turned all tips down. I think that some of the customers felt insulted.
