Hello
I am not sure where to post this so I thoguht why not here, sorry if I am wrong. I am not net to magic or preforming, well I only have done it for small groups, ie 4 max. anyhow I was thinking about trying my skills on different crowd and I started woundering if and what magic you would do for a blind person?? they make braille cards although I don't think that would be enjoyable. I am at a loss any ideas?? ok thanks. and one more thing for doing magic for people with special needs, is it best to do mre visual tricks like sponge balls? cards are what I mostly do and I worry about the actuall audience that card tricks will work-on. ok thanks folks |

It depends on the level of "special needs" that you are talking about. If you are talking about a physical condition then you do not need to change anything. Even with mental conditions you might not want to change anything. If anything you might want to do the same type effects that you would do for a kids show. I have a very good friend that is a magician, and owns a magic shop, that is in a wheelchair. He has some physical limitations but loves magic and has placed in many competitions at conventions. (Check out http://magicxtwo.com/story.html for his story) The main goal here is to entertain our audience. Consider what audience you are performing for and try to have something in your act for everyone.
As for the blind, you might want to consider some mental effects that do not rely on something physical to be seen. A number effect would be one example. |

Here in Argentina there is a magician called Willy Tidona, who wrote a book called "Proyecto Mara" (it's in Spanish). It's the result of a 6 years study, performing and adapting magic tricks for blind people. It started when he met a blind girl, called Mara (that's were the name of the book came from), and it has been awarded in Malaga, Spain.
I haven't read that book, but it might help you. BYE! |

Taste Conditions by Morgan Strebler is perfect for the blind. He even mentions that is how he got the inspiration for the effect: He wanted something he could perform that was simply amazing for someone that blind as well as someone who could see.

"Mommy, what's that man doing up there?"
"He's putting on a Blindfold, my dear." "What's a Blindfold, Mommy?" "Something you wear so that you cannot see." "Why's he wearing one, Mommy?" "So that he can tell us what he's looking at." - |

How about a book test with a braille book?

Great question - difficult answer.
The problem with blind people is the difficulty to prove/show the initial condition.
Cards never lie

Check out Whit Haydn's "Street Magic" book. There's a great story in there about performing a card trick using a blind spectator.

If this post interests you, then I challenge you to seek out the blind with some of these effects !!!
Call your local association for the blind and offer your services. That's what I'm going to do. |
