I am putting together a my new routine for my Jumbo Sidekick. I have gotten a lot of ideas from fellow Café members but I am wondering what people say about the table. It seems kind of strange to have a table with a flower in a vase on the stage for a family/kid show.
I am going to use a special wand made after talking to KenW on the Café. I will not go into detail on his wand but I will use the remote. I am trying to figure out how to talk about the table. What are your thoughts? |

Ken's idea with the wand is awesome! You don't have to say anything about the table...it's just to hold the cards and the "easel" for the pack. If you feel that you MUST say something (and your character is comedic) about it, just say, "it's nice of the crew to try to dress things up a little with a flower."

Tim - Can I first commend you on your thinking. Having a flower there for no reason but to get shot is far less funny then having a flower that is there for another purpose when it accidentally gets shot at is far funnier.
As Steve mentions, the table and easel have a purpose, to hold props. The flower needs a purpose or reason as well. Ideas you might think of are: - Perform a small effect earlier in the show using the flower. The flower gets shot because it is in the wrong place at the wrong time. - Offer the flower as a prize if the spectator does the trick properly. You get a nice bit of pathos when the spectator destroys their own prize! - Comedy is increased when the risk is increased. At the start of your show mention 'The World Famous FLOWER trick - the most expensive trick in the show!". Mention it several more times. When the flower is shot, it will be far funnier. - Another way of increasing the risk would be to say it is a present from your mother (or a present FOR your mother). |

Well then why does ED have a flower?

Y'know, you can replace the flower with something like a thin, homemade (from a dowel) MAGIC WAND....anything that will fit into the vase will work.

NOT necessarily because it make sense. I say don't worry about it; you're audience certainly won't. |

This is strictly for an audience of magicians but I've always wanted to perform it like this:
You explain to the audience that this is your first time performing for an audience of magicians and you're really very nervous. Someone suggested to you that surrounding yourself with familiar objects would help to alleviate this situation. The curtain opens and there's a Recliner, a TV playing an old movie and your Jumbo Sidekick table. You explain to the audience that these are from your magic den and you brought them along as they give you a familiar and cozy surrounding to work in. Start into a rather lackluster and generic Jumbo Sidekick presentation (just like everyone else's ). However when the spectator starts firing the gun nothing happens. Look more and more frustrated as the prop (as usual) fails to work. Obviously reach into your pocket and fiddle with the remote. Still no results. Bring the remote out of your pocket and point it at the prop and, again in vain, try to activate it. Hopefully by this time the audience will have clued into the fact that every time you try to get the Jumbo Sidekick to work the channel on the television changes. Finally the TV tunes into CNN with a breaking news story of a magician in trouble finally ending with the reporter revealing the identity of the selected card.

As mentioned above "Sometimes all the reason you need is that you're a magician and it's part of the trick." An excellent full time kids performer pointed out to me that with kids particularly they love to see strange stuff.
