Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the famous Vernon photo where he is contemplating a deck of cards, with the Ace of Clubs on top, and a cigarette in the other hand? It can be seen here: http://www.bentreality.net/store/vernon.jpg
I'd like to get one suitable for framing, it doesn't have to be an original (although I'd be interested in that original Dale Vernon promo on which it was used if anyone knows where I can buy one). There are jpegs floating around the web (like the one I attached), but they are of poor quality and as I said, I'm looking for one that I can frame. Thanks, and Semper Fi Paul |

The photo you linked to looks pretty sharp - have you tried printing it out with an inkjet on matte photo paper? That'd probably look just like a professionally-printed photo. Of course, there might be a good source for an original of the photo, but I've had great success printing out some photos I wanted to frame and they look like normal photos.

I printed it out on a high-grade color printer, and even in a 3x5 pic it comes out a bit blurry. If it goes any larger it gets quite blurry.
Thanks for the input. I'm not having any luck tracking one down. Paul |

Paul,
Darn - sorry it didn't work. I wonder if Norm Nielsen might have any info on this photo, since he specializes in vintage magic posters and prints. Might be worth a try. His website is: http://www.nnmagic.com Best of luck, Charley |

Send an e-mail to all of the used magic dealers. One is bound to turn up somewhere.

The photo you are talking about was taken by Hal Phyfe, about 1938. I don't know where you can find a coy, but this information may help you search for it.

I wonder how to get ahold of that pic.
I too would also like a framed version. I wonder if Derek Vernon would know where or how to get a copy.

Thanks all for the replies.
Here is a report on what I've found. I talked to the folks at Nielson Magic (they are the NICEST folks!). It seems they had made a few copies of that Vernon photo in the past. They went so far as to get permission from Hal Phyfe. However, when the Vernon estate got wind of it, they received a cease-and-desist letter from the estate, and they no longer make copies of it. I can't say I blame Vernon's heirs. If ever there was anyone who suffered for his art, it was his kids. So, if they want to excercise some control over the distribution of their father's likeness, far be it for me to question them on that. Meanwhile, I will keep looking for a copy of the photo that is in circulation or the original promo. I will let folks know if I have any luck. Scody, do you know Derek Vernon, or know someone who would reach out to him and ask about the family's authorizing the reproduction of that photo? I bet that many magii would buy an authorized, quality copy. I know I would. Thanks, Paul |

A very nice sharp photo of Vernon looking down at the deck taken later in his life was included in the Deluxe Edition of the Vernon Chronicles (either Vol. 3 or 4, not sure)

This frontispiece of the book is dual, consisting of the full page Phyfe photo on the left, facing a black-and-white reproduction of the new photo "50 years later". You might be tempted to try scanning the Phyfe photo from the book, but you will probably be disappointed with the result, as the halftone screen used to print the photo in the book will probably interfere with the scan and cause a phenomenon known as a "Moire Pattern", or checkering. My feeling is that you probably ought to follow the suggestions above and contact Derek Vernon, if you want a quality print of the photo.

I was referring to an actually loose high quality glossy 5 X 7 color photograph by Young and Robin of Los Angeles depicting Vernon with a cigar and looking down on a deck of cards. There is an inscription under the image "Dai Vernon 50 Years Later". The photo was added as a bonus gift with Vol. 4 of the Deluxe Edition of the Vernon Chronicles. I just verified it in my library.

Many years ago I was able to order a copy (of the re-staged photo)directly from Young & Robin. They may still be able to sell them.
Put me down as someone who would also like a frameable copy of the Phyfe pic.

This topic is a few months old, so I'm not sure if anyone will bother, but if you do here's an interesting tidbit for you.
About 12 years ago, there was an ad in Magic magazine that advertised a print of a mixed media piece of Vernon done by magician Mitch Williams from Ohio. It was a combination of "old" and "young" vernon in the pose from the famous Phyfe photo. I had forgotten about it and one day found the old magazine and ordered it. It is signed and numbered by the artist and is framed and on display in my office. A few years after I had it, this same topic came up on the Genii forum. I told where to get said print and was contacted by David Ben who serves as legal counsel for the family. He told me that he had contacted Mr. Williams and given him the cease and desist letter. He also urged me to keep it, because no more will be sold. It is really one of my favorite pieces in my collection. |
