I currently do the Anderson tear in my show as well, and this morning the flash restore was met with the kids' jaws literally dropping - it's a great routine.
There's another great tear for those times when you want a little variety; Neil Foster's "Center Tear". It's an Abbott's exclusive and you can see Lance Burton performing it on Youtube in his famous dove act (he adds a fire effect to the trick, then produces a dove from the restored newspaper, but you can do it in a way that suits you). |

Thank you for the reply fter drhackenbush. After 20 years of performing I can't believe I have never done a torn and restore. After watching whit's routine I love how clean you come away from it. I wouldn't use his patter as It doesn't fit my style of performance but I think I can work this effect into my own style.

If you want to see another professional performance, look at Geoffrey Durham's at his website:

It appears to me that Geoffry Durham Uses the same routine that Whit Hadden Uses. Very Nicely done. and Indeed a Professional performance.

Both are adaptations of the Gene Anderson routine written up in his Newspaper Magic. Whit's follows Anderson's patter a bit more closely but they are essentially the same.
I'm working on it myself for children - I want to find some "funny" headlines or ads to "read out" from the torn pieces, which the kids will understand. You know the kind of thing: "clothing sale: men's trousers are coming down"

If you do a search, you can find some funny headlines here on the Café.

For you Gene Anderson fans I spoke with him awhile ago and right after I said "hey, you are alive!" he told me he is re-writing his book to take into account the smaller size of paper used in most news papers now. Don't know when it will be out but it should be cool.
