Dominatricks
Tyler Wilson Have you ever had that I can't wait to get this book feeling only to get the book and be completely dissapointed? I know I have, but in the case of Dominatricks, this is not the case. I anticipated this book as it was highly recommended to me. Let me set the scene for you all. I arrived home after a long days work only to see an all too familiar Penguin envelope awaiting me when I got there. I tore open the envelope and saw my newest book. But where was my interactice cd that came with it? Oh, it was there all right, in the back of the book in its own sleeve, phew!!! I opened the book and found some quotes from some leaders in magic. Let me quote the one I thought was best. Quote:
I read Tyler Wilson's book and that day I added four of his routines to my working restaurant repertoire! That night, I completely f****d them up. You should really practice these routines for more than a day! Andy, Magic Circle Jerk He is right, the routines in this book are not hard, but do require a lot of practice to get smooth. Reading further into the book, I came across a forward by David Acer which he calls Foreplay(get it, Dominatricks- Foreplay, nevermind). It is a good read into the workings of this book and how it came to be. I will now go into what I found further into the book. Welcome. This is my review. I like it. Rating System-1 being the easiest, 10 the hardest. This is my system for rating and I still consider myself a beginner, so intermediate to advanced can take that for what it is worth. Busting Chops Here Tyler describes in great detail the sleights needed to carry out the routines in the book. Rub N Tug The Rub-A-Dub Vanish face up, nuff said!!!! Difficulty 7 out of 10. The actual move itself is easy, but making it look convincing is the hard part. Pitching a Tent Vanish The Tent Vanish face up, nuff said!!!! Difficulty 6 out of 10. Again, the move itself is easy, but making it look convincing is the hard part. Tilts Tyler goes over 3 ways he has made doing Marlo's Tilt move more convincingly. One of the ways can be done surrounded!!! Difficulty 5 out of 10. These are rather simple, just require smooth movements which will take practice. Hasselhofzinser Your pick a spectator to pick the card you want her to pick. Difficulty N/A out of 10. I have yet to work on this, but it seems pretty simple. Gag Reflex Quote:
Laymen laugh when they see it. Magicians cringe when they see it You all know the gag where a card appears out from under a fan when the spectator goes to pick a card, well Tyler takes it a step further and turns it into a force. Looks nice when a card comes out from under a fan, and then it is handed to the unsuspecting spectator without them suspecting the unexpected. Phew, say that three times fast!!! Difficulty 8 out 10. I can't get the card to come out from under the fan as of yet, but I am working on it. Displayboy Jared Millican performing DisplayBoy Difficulty 3 out of 10. I had this down in a few minutes practice, I just need to smooth it out to be a perfect display of a card. Routine Examination Now that you have learned the basics for the routines, it's time to move on. There will be no rating system as I have not yet worked on the routines. Compost-IT How many ACR's have you seen? Have you seen one that uses a post it note to make the magic happen? This is a very clever routine utilizing everybody's favorite office supply. The finale has to be seen to be believed. This is going to be my ACR from now on. Release the chocolate hostage Quote:
How would you like to change a selection into a different card while the spectator's signature is still on it? How would you like a routine built around the change so it all actually makes sense? How would you like fries with that? Neat idea that is sure to get some great reactions. Dirty Stinkin' ape in the middle... Quote:
If Ferris Bueller were to perform a sandwich routine, this would be it. Clean Sanchez...... Quote:
Two selections are lost in a very clean manner, only to be found exactly where they're supposed to be..... Sound boring? Buy the book and you will see this is an incredibly well thought effect, surely capable of getting you some of your best reactions ever. B52 Shooter<<<<< A Triumph of sorts, where all the face down cards shoot out of the deck leaving only face up cards in the hand, except for a pesky card that was signed by the spectator!!!!! I like this one!!!!! Coke Inhabit_ _ _ _ _ _ A coin in bottle like no other!!!!! This is truly the sweetest coin in bottle to date. Matrimony$$$$$$$$ Coins across with a twist. Very clean handling, and a surprise ending. stick it to the man... A mentalism routine. I like it Paul Mase's Trick...................... This is an Open Travellers effect(yes, another one) that is very cleverly designed to fool even the most obsessed Invisible Palm enthusiasts. One at a time, the 4 aces dissappear out of a blue backed deck of cards to join the leader ace on the table, invisibly!!. Did I mention the aces have red backs? This is the end all to end all Open Travellers routines. I no longer need to learn The Invisible Palm from AOA because this one blows it away. Scarred Warp. . . . Another quote from the inner flap!!! Quote:
To add another dimension to the plot of a card turning inside out is by no means easy, but Mr. Wilson has succeeded admirably. A card that turns inside out with a center that simultandously becomes invisible, is a fascinating and amazing thing to watch. A fact that will be confirmed by your spectators. Congratulations Mr. Wilson. Roy Walton(creator of the original Card Warp) Need I go on? Sven Whoa>>>>>>> Quote:
Have you ever wanted to perform a Svengali Deck routine using a normal deck? Me neither, but here's a routine inspired by our favorite gaffed deck anyway. I like this routine, and Tyler gives a nice explanation of how to do it impromptu. Sloppy 30 Seconds****** For the restaurant worker comes this little gem. A transposition of two cards, one of which was dropped on the floor by accident at the beginning of the trick, all done in under 30 seconds. This is a masterpiece if you can pull it off. It takes balls so big, you can raise the Titanic with them!!!!! But when you pull it off, you WILL be remembered, just like Tyler. Summary I bought this book with high hopes and it came through. I got a book filled with routines that I will actually use, not just a bunch of filler. Tyler is an exceptional writer and it is very easy to learn from this book. There are numerous pictures to guide you through and if that is not enough, there is a CD that came with it to show you what the Sleights are supposed to look like!!!! There is even a printable left handed version of the book on the CD. Prinouts are also available for some of the effects that need them. After each effect, Tyler describes in detail the outs and sublties that make each effect work. You will also see the extensive amount of research Tyler did for this book, giving credit where credit is due and even gives you the books and/or manuscripts in which to find the source. Tyler also writes, in detail, his patter used for these effects. You are not getting generic patter, but the actual patter he uses. I know many will think that this will create clones, but like he says Quote: , this is tested patter that he knows works with the routines.
"Even if someone were to recite my presentation word-for-word during their performance, they would no doubt sound completely different than I would." The Official Spam Quote:
Dominatricks is a magic book that drips with style. It's hard-backed, innovation-stacked and action-packed with 150 pages of material Tyler Wilson counts on night after night to transform deafening laughter into stunned silence. You can build a professional close-up / walk-around act on these routines. Tyler Wilson did. Nothing is left out: you get the full handlings, presentations, jokes and tips reaped from thousands of real world performances. Priced at $30, you really can't go wrong with this one. You get solid routines, learn some fantastic sleights and it is a fun read all together. http://www.penguinmagic.com/specialorderproduct.php?ID=8893 |

The other reviews are also very positive. I actually missed seeing Tyler lecture by a day when he visited the bay area (I visited the next day).

Magikrn,
Did you have it shipped via the "free shipping" offer? If so, how long did it take to get to you and was it shipped "Media Mail"? Was it shipped securely protected or was it just thrown into a (padded?) envelope and arrived with damaged book corners, etc. I'm thinking of buying this book but I don't want it to arrive damaged nor do I want to run the risk that it might be shipped in such a manner that it might arrive damaged. Thanks for the info. Mike

My wife ordered it for me so I am not sure if she got it free delivery or not. I know it showed up within a few days of ordering, and like many Penguin products, it showed up in an envelope but the book came in perfect condition. Not a bent corner on it.

You can also pick this up through the writer/publisher of the book Andi Gladwin. I believe they are still offering a special deal if you buy the book direct. Check it out..

With that in mind, I always ensure that whenever the book is ordered from me it is packaged extremely well so that you get it in pristine condition. Before that, I ensured that the printers printed it in perfect condition, that the books were well packaged from the printers and that they are stored in a way that will not damage them. What I'm basically trying to say is that Dominatricks has been a two-year long adventure for me and because of that I treat all orders with utmost respect. So, if you would like peace of mind in this matter, I am happy to accept your order and ensure that it is packaged perfectly for you. It seems that one or two dealers (not all of them) who are trying to pile them high and throw them out the door may not have as much respect for your book. --Andi

Joshua,
The first printing was softback, but now is hardback. I completely sold out of the softbacks, so only have the hardbacks available. --Andi

It's a great book with a bunch of great stuff. I use a few of the routines in my professional repertoire like Scarred Warp and Sloppy 30 Seconds.

Unfortunately, I can't order from you because (I think) you only do PayPal and I refuse to use PayPal in any form. Hence, I was delighted to see that the book is being sold directly here in the USA by a bonafide dealer. However, I have order from dealers before and have had things poorly packaged and damaged. Hence, my question to a fellow Café member who had actually purchased the hardcover version from Penguin. If you accept International USPS M.O., I'd be happy to send one to you but, failing in that, I'm looking for another USA source--one that might treat the items it sends out with more care and respect. Looks like now I will be passing on Penguin in that I am anal retentive about my magic items and how they should be treated, handled and stored. So now I'm hoping that some Café member might have information on some other USA dealer. Thanks again for the post, Andi. It was much appreciated. Mike

This is the funniest magic book I have ever read! Also, Tyler is such a great guy, and these effects are really only done justice when seen live.

Has anyone had personal dealing with Penguin Magic to the extent that you have dealt with a live warm body and been able to make requests and had them honored? I'd love to be able to call them up, explain my desire to have the book bubble wrapped and/or shipped in a box, have them agree to honor this request and then actually have them do honor the request.
Does Penguin Magic actually have the merchandise (that they take order for)in stock in their warehouse? Or are they merely taking the order and then having a 3ed party doing the shipping form the 3rd party's warehouse stock? If they are this "customer friendly", I'd take a chance and order the book from them. But, if they are merely taking orders and then having someone else (like Murphy's?) actually doing the S&H, I think my request would stand a good chance of "getting lost in the translation" and I'd get the book shipped unprotected in a flimsy envelope. Mike P.S. Anyone thinking of selling their copy (either HB or SB) in the near future? If so, please PM me with a price and maybe we can "work something out". Thanks.

I have no idea whether they ship everything out or use Murphy's. I've gotten stuff in padded envelopes and also in boxes from them. I recently purchased AOA Vol. 3, ordered it free shipping, and it came in less than a week in a large box with those foam bubbles and with first-class postage on the label of almost $12.
If anything, with Penguin I've more often had things shipped in a better manner or faster service than expected. Still, I think that padded envelopes for books is the norm. I bought "Session" directly from Josh Jay, and it came in a regular padded envelope in fine condition. Why not just try calling Penguin and asking? I've often had bad response from Penguin via email, but when I've called and inquired about an order the operators have been fine. |
