So CA and DB never performed card illusions?
Sad! And remember, if it's made for TV it's not reality. Cheers!

Don't be silly..if they are amazing illusions using cards, that is great, but not just ordinary card tricks....and each performer would need more than just card tricks to qualify for this particular show....but if you have an amazing illusion involving card, bring it on!

Yes those shows were indeed of a quite high quality. I take back my train wreck statement.
It will be a train wreck in slow motion.

The who thing confuses me...
Just a few weeks ago Criss Angel does show debunking fake physics and then he turns around and teams up with one of the biggest phonies of them all to search for America's next great physic? Who is next??? Silvia Brown???? Regardless... I hope Uri and Criss give contestants a break if they don't "feel strong". LOL Check out the video to see what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8ID5-pBw7E Best, Tim |

On 2007-08-12 02:27, Tony Iacoviello wrote: Hi Tony, Here is one of many news articles online that focus on "mentalists" and say NOTHING about illusionists or magicians. AngelCriss Angel & Uri Geller Team Up For NBC Reality Show NBC has signed a series deal with mystifier/artist Criss Angel and famed mentalist Uri Geller for "Phenomenon" (working title) -- a mysterious live competition series in which both men will conduct an intensive search for the next great mentalist. The series, based on a successful Israeli version judged and monitored by Geller which achieved a historical record-breaking viewing audience, tests 10 hopeful mentalists who must compete each week to demonstrate a wide spectrum of mystifying talents on a panel of weekly celebrity guests who participate along with a studio audience. Now... I am not mentalist but " I predict" that the show is going to be based on mentalists and magicians are going to be used as filler material. They are looking for an act they can market easily in the same way a singer always wins the talent contests. Do you really think Criss is looking to promote the next great illusionist to compete with him? Uri hasn't seen much success in the US market for years so he has a stake in backing a new name in mentalism. I suspect the producers think the visuals of illusionists performing will help balance the show out as there will be a lot of smaller effects and non-visual mind reading going on. They say " no card tricks" because smaller tricks like that are going to be the focus of the many mentalists and the show will need some visual" box tricks" to entice the audience to watch. I'm not saying this show will be bad for magic or that someone who wants exposure on a television show shouldn't participate. I'm just saying they should be prepared to know what to really expect from it. "a mentalist WILL win" Best, Tim |

The articles like the one you presented here are why I became interested in the show. When I read the casting notice and it mentioned illusions like David Blaine and Criss Angel, I had serious questions. So I contacted the casting director. You can find out a lot about a show when you learn what they are looking for in casting. The are looking for a dynamic performer who can capture the audience and entertain them in the 3 to 7 minute slots that the show allows for. Flashy quick eyecandy in the beginning of the series to a little bit more involved towards the end. -------------------------------- Danny Yes, excatly like Criss' show is my guess. Tony |

On 2007-08-12 13:02, Tony Iacoviello wrote: Hi Tony, Yes... that's exactly what I mean. Illusionists and eyecandy in the beginning to attract viewers and then " more involved" mentalist walks away as winner in the end. There are many other reasons I suspect this. I'm sure a "contract" is part of the prize. Its always a contract and not just cash. The produces get complete control over the winner for the duration of the contract. This will be fine for some unknown who is willing to do that but not for the illusionists who will be appearing on the show. You'll see many full time workers and "ringers" on this show. If you doubt that just look at who was on AGT and other similar shows. Uri is looking to cash in on a new face in mentalism and that's exactly what happen. All press releases similar to the one I posted focus on Mentalism and don't mention magicians or illusions at all. That part only came up after the fact when they realized it'd be helpful to the shows ratings. Next.. someone will say..." but the audience decides " and before they do I'll remind them that the audience only will be voting on those who make it to the finals and the producers will have full control over that part. I surely expect to what this show. It will be interesting to see how it is handled. I'll always watch any magic related show ( that's live magic ...not CGI magic ) and wish all who perform on it great exposure and success. I stand by my opinion that a mentalist will WIN. Only time will tell if I am right and I'll eat my words if I am wrong but I suspect I won't have to. I'll grit my teeth during the show intros when they are showing clips of what makes Criss worthy to be an expert as a judge. Hopefully they will show only clips of live performance and not a montage of CGI levitations and stooged effects. That wouldn't be fair to those performing live in this show. ( unless they can do the same ) I'm also wondering who the "formulaic 3rd judge" will be. That the one who's job it is to criticize the acts with nasty comments the first two don't want to say publicly. Maybe they will bring Piers in???? LOL I don't mean to sound negative. ( just realistic ) If you can get on this show with some good material then go for it. A national audience is never a bad thing for a good act. Poor Nathan Burton is crying all the way to the bank that he didn't win AGT. LOL Best, Tim |

Here is my question.
Criss has spent 3 seasons explaining how unique and different he is from all other magicians. How he invented everything (ala Al Gore at times) how he is the be all and the end all. Now he not only is working with LOTS of magicians, but he is doing something so unoriginal as to be almost out of date. Go figure.

If it's like the Israeli version, there will be 3 celebs who will help judging the mentalists, and also participant in most of the effects themselves. That will allow some Pre-Show to make things look more "real".

That all presupposes that a mentalist will make it to the final 3. with less than 3 minutes from introduction to walking off stage, visual and flashy will capture the audience’s attention, and not many mentalists have material like that, that can compete with livestock productions, fire, and several other visually entertaining illusions that the magical entertainers have available. The people who will get the votes will be those who are most visual. I’m not saying that a mentalist cannot do it, but that person would have to adopt other techniques and incorporate them in his/her act. A simple prediction coupled with the Head Drop illusion, maybe a spoon bending coupled with the Lean, very visually stunning pieces that add an extra dimension to the performer and shock/please the studio and television audience. The only problem with this approach is that you have to continue it throughout the show, even when you have more time because it is expected/anticipated by the audience. If a mentalist can succeed in adding the extra dimension to his/her work, she/he will make it to the final 3, otherwise, there will just be magical entertainers at the end. --------------------- Danny What he says and what he does are two different things. But to be honest, his stage show that he performed in NY was unique (discounting the Rudy Coby like illusions). It was a fantastic show! It has only been since he "made it" that he, well, I won't get into it, not my place. Tony |
