Taking a little poll here...
How many of you ever here back from another performer that you referred a job to? Many times when I can't perform for a client ( already booked, too far away..etc ) I refer them to someone in their area. Sometimes the person I referred will call or email with a hardy " Thanks". Most of the time I hear nothing. ( even when they know the job was a referral from me ) Years ago I referred all the work from one area to a person who never ever said thanks. One day he was unavailable so I referred someone else. That person called right away to thank me for the booking. Now .... who do you think had gotten all the bookings since then??? Hmmmmm? My point here is not to say I need a thanks. My point is to let others know how far a "Thanks" goes in this business of ours. It's good manners and very good business as well. Food for thought? Best, Tim |

I never get a thanks.
I always email them or call them to see how it went though. And they tell me about it. I don't think I have ever gotten a thanks. -john |

I only refer within a tight circle of close and trusted friends...after all, their professionalism with the client and performance will reflect back on me. We nearly always touch base and keep each other posted...and thanks flow freely and honestly. It helps that most of us meet a couple times a month for a leisurely social lunch or dinner.
Keeping in touch with your professional network is nearly as important as keeping up with your clients. Great points, Tim. |

25 years ago I always got thanked for show referrals, I think in the the last two years I've given maybe 30 gigs over to a couple of local guys and never a thank you, don't know if it is the generation or what.

I get thanked fairly regularly. I try and thank people where possible but sometimes the client doesn't tell them where they got the gig from.

We live in a time where there are classy folks and people that are takers and not givers.
But...... Doctors refer, but get a "fee" for doing so. If Magi want to be considered in that league, then refer to folks you have an understanding with. The check you get will be the thanks you crave. No such agreement? Then it's like letting someone change lanes when driving: if you do it because you "crave a wave" of thanks, then you're expecting a thanks based on a courtesy. Are you being polite because it's the right thing to do, or because your ego must have a thank you?

Tim, I didn't direct my comment at anyone. I'm just making a generalization about society, the business world, etc.

Hi Christopher,
No worries. You make an excellent point though. As much as I refer a person or let someone into traffic " for the right reason" Honestly...I am a little disappointed when the gesture is blown off. ( mostly in traffic ) Maybe it IS then a little of both??? Regardless....a " thanks" goes a long way theses days when you see them less and less. Best, Tim |

In todays busy world it seems that NO ONE that I have given shows to has ever said Thank You. It seems that people take for granted shows that are handed to them on a silver platter. I only deal with 2-3 people that I can trust to put on a Classy or FUN Family show. My reputation has to be kept up, if I refer someone else to a client that person will reflect my character whether I like it or not. Even though I am not the one performing it still will reflect that I recommended this other perfromer. So be careful on who you refer. I have had numerous clients that I have done shows for other entertainers and I ALWAYS SEND A PERSONAL THANK YOU NOTE within 1-week to the person who refered me.

The "members" of our small group all used to charge one another a referral fee way back. But, as we began to refer shows to one another in earnest, it became an issue of practically passing a check back and forth.
Now, we simply refer to one another out of good will and fellowship. I don't particularly like the pack mentality of adolescent teens in the Bar and Bat Mitzvah age group. So I refer these calls to a friend who delights in this age & social group. He doesn't fair well with the under 7-years age group, so he refers them to me. Another peer enjoys adult magic but dislikes the bar & comedy club crowds...so he refers these to me and one other. I don't fit into stuffy society parties, so I refer these to him and one other. We have a large and growing (Oy vey!) Hispanic population...while I enjoy these parties, it's usually more productive to hook these callers up with a fluent Spanish-speaking peer. He's so busy with these that he sends me his overflow Anglo calls. We each have our specialties and we each support one another while best serving the needs of our prospective clients. The only thing we've ever argued about (so far) is who's turn it is to pick up the check when we meet for lunch and dinner. Knock wood! I don't disagree with referral fees...but having a strong inter-supportive network of qualified peers is better than a Royal Flush over a heavy pot. |

Folks,
Any fellow magician that gives me a referral, is given a straight 20% of my take; I usually pay asap; The only way to look at a referral, is that it's business that I wouldn't have had; BWind |

Isn't 20% a tad high for a mere "try calling so-and-so?"

Social/civil courtesy is a dying concept. How many of you ramble aloud on a cell phone while also trying to enteract with a bank teller, or a cashier? The cell phone has taken social etiquette to new lows. Society, in general, is less considerate of others. In fact, there are entire groups of kids these days who don't get offended for not being thanked, or told excuse me, because they were never taught to say those things anyway!
So it does not surprise me Tim, to hear of your encounters with the unappreciative. But I do feel ya! |
