I am already going to go through with my plan but I would like some imput and feedback before I attempt this.
To put it plain and simple I am going to approach my club director at my high school and propose an idea to start a magic club. I am going to be a junior next year and starting a club is a great leadership role to add to applications for college in the upcoming years. Of course I am not doing this just for the application as I love magic and would love to try to spread the art of magic around my community. My problem is this... The club director is also the athletic director at my school and I am not sure that he would endorse this idea at all. I am planning to propose that we meet once a month and discuss different topics on magic and how it can relate to other things in life, along with some basic tricks to learn and have competitions ect within our group. All of this I'm planning to lead up to an end of the year get-together/ performance in either a nursing home or community facility that would appreciate our magic. I plan to emphasize the fact that we will be going out into the community at the end of the year as a so called service project, but I'm not sure if that will be enough to convince him. I was also wondering if anyone has ideas as to turn it into a multi-interest club of some sort, where it is more likely to be started. There are already a small group of people who appreciate and perform magic and I have had many people interested in learning. Now I know we will have to weed out people who just want the secrets to tricks, but I believe there already is a decent enough following in our school to start the club. Any comments/concerns/flaming (I know this ones coming) are welcome . Thanks in advance |

Hi,
This sounds like a great idea, I'm glad you have support from people in your school. I belong to a young magicians club on the Isle of Man. There's only 1 on the whole island and yet still only have 10 members! I don't see why it should be a problem having the club director as the sports director as well, surely they can't stop non sporting clubs. Just say that this would be a unique opportunity and would encourage self confidence! Good Luck, I hope it works, we need more youth interested in magic! Lexi |

There are already a small group of people who appreciate and perform magic and I have had many people interested in learning. Having a charter membership of people that already perform is a good start. I would suggest that anyone who wants to join later will have to show that they are not just curious and have some magic knowledge. Make them do some effects and answer a few select questions before deciding on thier membership. For the curious, you might set up a couple of after school classes for those interested in learning some magic. Perhaps an introduction to performance magic, some effects with common props and later have an intermediate class. This would help weed out newcomers to magic and if you charge a small fee bring some funds to the club. Nice idea about the club performing in community facilities. Pehaps use it as a final test of an advanced class. Whatever you decide, good luck. |

Hi, allinking17
I actually have already started a class in my ex high school. As for to convince the director I only showed him couple tricks then he agreed to open a class as for he need at least 20 students interested which also I could provide. I also got little bit "problem" when I open the class for the first time. Few fellow magicians doesn't seem agree to it. But I guess my problem has solved already. If you have any question, feel free to ask or pm me Good luck with your class Andre
