Lol mindpunisher who's attacking you? I agree with most of what you had to say but differ in regards to this actual specific piece.Anyways I cant wait to read the book and like I said feck all the questions
Like Declan Im a fan of Paul's(just bought two manuscripts last week)..Im a fan not because of his material(which Im sure is great!) but by the way he handled the non-stop questions and obvious fishing with a smile and humour Fair play! I'd buy him a drink....but Im Irish |

Remember, Serial Killer is just one of the routines.
As well as the routines, Paul goes over a lot of subtleties and the psychology behind everything. Even if you didn't use a single effect from this, it's worth getting just for all that. I won't be commenting anymore on Serial Killer as I've said as much as I can without exposing, just know that it's an amazing effect that I absolutely love, and one that really does come across as the real thing. Great job Paul on this, I think this manuscript will teach me a great deal. Oh, one more thing... the Serial Killer video is not an advertisement, it's a performance and one which accurately portrays what happens. I had to say this as from reading through this thread, it seems some may think otherwise. |

I never said anyone was attacking me in this thread. But being attacked on the Café for having a different view in general is rife on here. I'm sure Pauls material is good. That wasn't the issue,
The video may not be an advert but has been left to suggest its the same effect it isn't from pms Ive recieved. As I understand it isn't impromtu and you can't walk up to a complete stranger in the street and do this. Otherwise there are dozens of ways to "appear" to be plucking out serial numbers from spectators mind. Literally dozens. Quote: On 2007-08-18 18:18, Peter Carroll wrote: |

It's not totally impromptu as has been said, but it is a complete stranger you perform to. There is no billets, writing anything down etc. What you see in the video IS what happens.
Right that really is my last say on this. |

Guys,
I think that everyone reading both of your posts will understand your stance on this matter. There is, in point of fact, no need to ramify ones position any longer; except in the interests of nauseating boredom New comments are welcomed and will bring me antiemetic relief. Remember, don't let magic make you SAD (little plug for Loochy there ) Kindest, -Paul

Wow! A very entertaining thread. It once again re-inforces my strong conviction that anyone who offers or reviews an effect should always state the PROS and CONS. Since no effect is perfect there has to be some CONS. If this would be done with all reviews or offers for sale we would all be able to judge whether or not the product suits our style. One man's trash is another man's gold. It's like asking what is the best swami? There is no best of anything just each person's preference.

>>>>>As mentioned beforehand, I really do not consider the modus operandi to be pre-show work either. I understand that people have a great deal of problems setting up pre-show work and find it daunting, therefore, they seek impromptu effects. As this methodology is not pre-show I would say that it is very practical and virtually impromptu as It can be performed within 5-10 minutes if so required.
I understand where you are coming from mindpunisher, and I must also say that explaining that the effect is not impromptu does hint towards the methodology and may also give people the incorrect perception that pre-show work is involved. A quandary leading one to the feeling of flogging a dead horse.<<<<< Paul I don't see where this leads to the methodology. I do see that it is a legit concern. I seek impromtu material not because I find pre-show daunting but because I seek material for certain situations where pre-show isn't possible. From what I understand this effect wouldn't be practical for my conditions. And therefore would not applicable. I think its only fair that anyone should know that before buying any effect. If there is any dead horse to be flogged I'ld rather flog it before I shell out cash. And in line with the video I think it was relevant to clear this up. I think we should have a hint to all methodology before we buy any effect. Afterall the method is work. And like anyone I like to be happy in my work. I like to have an idea of what that work will entail. And the limitations as well as the advantages. I think that's very very fair considering how much flavour of the month material I have lying around gathering dust. I wish you continued success.. |

Paul, your patience and tolerance has prompted me to order your book. I'm awaiting PayPal confirmation as I type.
In my opinion, you've answered more questions and given more information than a reasonable person could ask for. I mainly perform on stage so the fact that the effects aren't strictly impromptu means nothing to me. I always take the time to pack my show and make sure everything is in working order long before the performance. What's another few minutes? You've clearly said that pre-show, in the commonly accepted sense, isn't involved and that there are no stooges. Combined with the effect description, that makes it sound like something that just might work. I won't repeatedly fish and interrogate you for methodology. |

Great Post Doiron!
To others: Are we going to have to go on and on? THERE IS ALWAYS A METHOD! Paul made no claims about what those were. It gets bit tedious that everytime someone offers something a bit different people have to start throwing stones. This is reminiscent of Docc Hilford's "Cellular Mitosis" (which I enjoyed immensely). The difference here is Paul has put forth no hyperbole, nor made any claims. He has just offered these ideas to the mentalism community. Docc made some claims which all could not be true at the same time. The different variations of that idea did validate each of the claims. We are getting bogged down with concerns of method. THE EFFECT IS EVERYTHING. I am currently "digesting" this but I have truly enjoyed these ideas so far. I will post a more complete "review" when I've given it a thorough read. Sean |

Hi Paul, I've been intrigued by the materials you have put out so far, but be honest, how much of it is real magic?

I purposely have avoided commenting on this thread so far, due to my low posting status.
However I have Paul's last book of 'the gift' and up to that point I hadn't really gone down the route the book was suggesting, but his thinking and presentation was brilliant. This book actually changed the way I presented mentalism. I don't have his latest book yet, but will be ordering it. To me the effects (with respect to Paul) are a by-product of what you get out of his books. The thinking and subtleties are what value as gold dust for me. I understand the argument about how an effect is presented, but even if the serial number effect required something I wouldn't do, I would still buy it for the thinking behind it. Like I said his last book 'The Gift' gave me new pointers and presentational idea for my routines which have improved them greatly. My opinion/respect for Paul has increased greatly by seeing how he handled the questioning on this board, and as already mentioned answered way beyond what he needed to. Looking forward to ordering the latest. Steve

You know (from all of your private messages) that the market is there, so if you were to place an "ad" here, then I'm sure your return on investment would take care of itself. I have read on previous threads that the process for placing ads on here is time consuming. Yet there seems to be no shortage of advertisers here. I have never offered or advertised anything here on the Café, so my opinions may be frivolous and irrelevant. Just my little piece of thinking. I do support the idea of paying to play. DT3 |

Hey DT3,
I have already started the process of looking into a café ad and Steve has sent me a price list. The ball is rolling, as they say Thanks DT3, no chops busted, you make a fair point Kindest, -Paul P.S. Thanks to Waters and Steve and others who have actually read the manuscript before deciding to comment

I've got this and I really, really like it. There's stuff in it I wouldn't use (‘cause I'm an old dog, and you know what they say about old dogs... apart from being incontinent, that is!)
Oh, and while we’re on the subject, Mindpisher, you said <<I seek impromtu (whatever THAT is - DM) material not because I find pre-show daunting but because I seek material for certain situations where pre-show isn't possible. From what I understand this effect wouldn't be practical for my conditions. And therefore would not applicable.>> Okay, then, go find something that IS, and stop harping on about it. I don’t EVER use playing cards in my act, but I’ve often purchased an MS that requires the use of them. Do I go banging on about that not being mentioned in the sales blurb? No! I just get on with it. There are other effects that might require weird hairstyles and ladies makeup – well, I don’t do either. Do I go banging on about that not being mentioned in the sales blurb? No! I just get on with it. Sometimes, I perform in the kilt. Some of the effects require a NW or PW, and there are no pockets in a kilt. Shouldn’t I moan on and on and on a forum that THOSE effects cannot be performed in Scottish National Dress? Or that was not mentioned in the sales description? No! I just get on with it. Know why? Because I have better things to do with my time. Okay? So give us all a break and move on… (By the way, being aged means you can be grumpy about anything you want, and nobody can do a thing about it.) By the way, Paul’s thinking is fresh, innovative and has a real ring of originality… But, yes, there are effects that use playing cards – but not women’s makeup – though they could be performed in a kilt. Be warned!) All in good (Scottish) fun, Drew |
