This afternoon, I went on a quest to see how inexpensively I could make a set of cups and balls, including a final load for each cup. My initial thought was to try places like Garden Ridge, because they are national chains. Targer and Wal-Mart would also qualify. However, these proved to be of little use at all. I was mainly interested in what are called "stadium cups." These are plastic cups that have shoulders and skirts. They also have either ridges or depressions in the bottoms.
I really struck gold at the 99¢ store. They had two different sets of plastic cups -- one was a 16 oz. set, the other a 30 oz. set -- four cups in the one set and three in the other. Either set would work, but I prefer a smaller set to a large one. There were also packages of tennis balls 3/99¢ or baseballs at 99¢ each. My criteria were as follows: The cups must be opaque. They must have some quality, such as a shoulder, that keeps them from jamming together. They must be the same color. So, that's only $2 for the cheapest version with tennis balls and $5 for the version with baseballs. The other dollar is for a sponge which you cut up to make four cubes to use as balls. It's even cheaper if you use wadded up napkins.

Mind you, I tried several different "dollar stores." The national chain, The 99¢ Store, had the best selection of the bunch.
In fact, if you have landed in a strange town and all of your luggage has been held up, and you need to do a show, you can get everything you need to do a 45 minute standup show at these places. The only thing I would be careful of is the item you need for the gimmick in the Anderson Newspaper Tear. You can get that at Home Depot or Wal-mart, though.

That happened to our travelling spook show... we got to a theater and there was no stage, a movie screen came down and was nailed to the front of the stage.
A trip to Woolworths and a local hardward store, backed with the knowledge from the Tarbell Course and we did a full evening show in the aisles. Never had to unpackk and set and re-pack the illusions.

Yep. The best magic shop is often the department store or the hardware store.

I found some tall steel cups that nest, I'm going to try to place a saddle in them when I get them finished I'll post a picture of them. The open edn leaves a shoulder of about two inches. Cost was 1$ each. More to follow.
