You do a show for a grade school class in Homer, Alaska and get paid with fresh salmon...(Teacher's husband was a commercial fisherman).
You do a fundraiser for a small local church and get paid 50 bucks and two oil changes...(Pastor also owned a muffler shop). You do a 7 year olds birthday party and get paid with a one hour massage... (Mom was a massage therapist, certified). Cash is king but I will barter on occasion. Anyone else? Bob |

I got a free one year membership to a fitness club worth over £500 in exchange for a couple of shows at their Fun day. I think I went about 3 times during that year, so they got the better deal! They must have taken one look at my physique and realised it was a safe bet!

I did a Harry Potter event at several theatres a couple of years ago, and received 30 movie tickets (good for any movie). A few I used for my family, the rest I sent to good clients and as "thank you's" to people who booked me for events.

I once performed a series of shows for a local restaurant at a reduced rate.
I think I charged them a thousand dollars for 5 shows and they threw in a dinner for my wife and I. I know this doesn't sound like much but it was for a very exclusive place that has a waiting list that is months long and each dinner runs around $250.00. And yes, it was one of the best meals I've ever had.

On a few occasions I have been handed an envelope containing my pay in $1 bills and quarters. Daycares a few times and one Christian School I performed for did this. They had asked each child to bring a dollar or two for the show.
When you get a wad of money like that you feel kinda like you robbed a bank . . . too bad it wasn't hundred dollar bills though

I once got paid with 2 dozen pierogies each week for a year from a Serbian Church in McKees Rocks Pa. Brought me in a number of shows during the year for cash, but the perogi's were excellent.
I also did a show for a convent and they insisted that I accept a french provincial marble topped entry table with 2 matching chairs. It belonged to the original owners of the estate that the convent sits on. They went down on the Titanic and the estate went to the to the convent. |

Last month I traded 16 IMAX tickets for a show at the Exploris Museum. I had a pro photographer & videographer there in trade for an hour of close-up. I'm happy.

Left-handed cigarettes
Which are worth their weight in gold following a show that has a couple of 12-14 year olds that are required to be at a 'small kids' party by their parents. Edit: In case that sounds really bad, I meant for me. Not the 14 year olds. |

After a reading show around the Harry Potter release they asked me if I accepted tips, of course I said "yes" and they gave me a full boxed set, shrink wrapped right from the printer, set of Harry Potter books. I got my check, went home, and started reading...my daughter and I are now trying to see who can finish the whole series first...

Mr. Riddle, I can't imagine anything looking better on a resume' than that.
I've received tips while table-hopping in many different currencies, but not for a stand-up or stage show. |

I performed at a camp where they emptied out the soda machine and whatever was in there I got paid. it was funny telling the campers that they should drink plenty of soda while they were there. I did this 6 times one summer.
