What do you guys think about this type of busking???
good way to start out, before making a bigger/ possibly better routine??? I perform for a trickle, MAINLY, because I'm saving up for a pouch, so then I can start getting my routine together *THAT SAID, I'm working on the other effects in the routine* your thoughts on this... DANNYDOYLE, HERES THE OTHER THREAD!!
Been a busker since I was 14 from San Diego; Don Driver was my mentor along with many others like Jimmy Talksalot, Sleeveless (Stephen Sloan), Bob Elliott.

One busker (who is quite respected on this forum)told me this was all he did when he started out. I don't see anything inherently wrong with the approach, but I am not sure the size of your show has any bearing on the exclusion of a hat line. Perhaps others here with more experience than I can comment.
Just curious...where in San Diego are you working? |

Well, I usually "trickle" out side the magic shop up in escondido (45 minutes from moms house, 15 from dads) on friday nights during Crusin Grand
but the guy who runs the shop has dissapeared off the face of the Earth but Im planning on working at Balboa Park once I get a permit

Hi Guardian,
depending on the venue and show it can work. When I busk as I twist balloons, I do a small magic show (ten minutes)to attract the crowd, then give a sculpture to the last volunteer and say that I'm more than happy to twist for the children in return for donations. I have a small tin on my table with my business cards and I usually get a nice line that lasts an hour or so, make reasonably good money and get bookings. Things may be culturally different where you are (I work in 'small ' towns in Australia), but, hey, if you want to start with a trickle while you get your confidence up - why not? You are getting experience and your are not hurting anyone are you? Please consider twisting a balloon sculpture or two while you are doing magic. I think if you are just starting out, you'll make more money so you can get the odd effect, book or dvd. Some people tend to look down on balloon sculptors, but they're visual, cute, fascinating and you can do heaps of gags with them. If you don't know how, learn a few quick sculptures (got to be quick) and give them to your volunteers after the magic - I think you'll find you get more tips... Best wishes and have a blast out there, |

Trickle= setting out a case or tip jar to collect tips rather than making a big pitch at the end of a set show. The money sorta "trickles" in.
If you are making money with a trickle, then I don't think you should be worried about it. I used one when I started off too. It's harder because you have to start and stop more often, and we all know stopping people can be the hardest part. Once you get your pouch, I would say move on to a flush.

That's what I'm planning
I can perform contantly for a trickle for about 3 hours, then I need to sit down people come and go as they please, they tip if they enjoyed it I think its a good way to gain experience yeah, I'm starting to save up for my pouch!!!

What I do is roatations.
I do a routine and at the end I say,"ladys and gentleman if your waiting for the end of my show its not comming I do this all day long over and over, if you saw anything you liked please put some money in the bag on the ground." then I do a different routine and at the end of that one I say,"ladtys and gentlemen if you were waiting for the end of my.....etc." this usually gives me a perpetual crowd and lots of paid practise. I've written about this and a lot of other stuff over at the other Café under "jimmy talksalot and he does" hope this was helpful. |

Dear Magic Laurie and All,
thanks for the kind words about balloon sculptors. It's a great skill to have and you can easily busk with it in the right place. Cellini says some kind words about balloon artists in his book and it's probably one of the easier ways into the street. You can of course take it a lot further too. I can twist over five hundred different sculptures (fifty or so behind my back) and have twisted as many as two hundred balloons in an hour for tips (with someone decorating them and giving them out) - so if you get quick and know a few speedy sculptures you can do well. You can easily enough add to a show with balloon stunts as well, but you have to have the personality or acting ability to go with it. Joe Lefler's dvd (vol 1)is an excellent place to start and from there you can get the experience and access other sources once you have those down pat. I've only been twisting for six or seven years and Lefler's dvd served me very well in my first year working markets. Hope this helps. |

Gary McKibbon wrote a GREAT book on magic busking using a trickle. The book is called "A Guide To Magical Street Performing."
I HIGHLY recommend it if you are thinking of starting small. Some great information in this book. I also believe Prof. Gizmo is a member here.
