Hi,

I've heard that Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle had a bit of a rivalry in regards to the validity of seances and spiritism. Does anybody know anything more about this? any books that discuss it?

thanks...

"The Man who walked through walls" is a good Houdini bio, with extensive writing on the subject.

There was the fairy incident wasnt there...conan doyle believed in that...but I thought in general doyle and weiss were in cahoots and worked together and put money up for any provable psychic skills?

if they could be tied to houdinis satisfaction, and passed the tests...they got the moolah..

Just finished a book called 'The secret life of Houdini' which covers this in some detail. A great read I might add. Got mine from Amazon.

To be Frank for a moment, I did my fine art dissertation on the two gentlemen in question. It was exploring the themes of Belief and Imagination. Conan Doyle was not a skeptic despite his eponymous heros logical deductions, and to Houdini's eternal dismay. Doyle's wife famously produced an automatic writing letter from Houdini's deceased mother, Houdini was livid.

Check out the tale of Mina (Marjorie?) Crandon too.
