There has been a lot of discussion of Steve Wyrick's show in the past here on the Café. Myself and fellow magi Ricardo Hernandez visited how show the other day and I am pleased to say it is much improved!
It recently opened at his brand new venue inside the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood. This venue is very slick looking and custum built, but it's much nicer and more intimate than his previous location at the Sahara. Gone is the colorful industrial-themed interior showroom with 1800 seats. The new venue is basic black all around, drawing your eye to the stage. It's quite small at 500 seats. The stage is not wide but is quite deep. Some of the same illusions remain - the helicopter appearance, Sam the Bellhop, and the Lear Jet appearance. However, Steve Wyrick's delivery has improved a great deal. It's more fast paced now, and while not perfect, he seems to connect with the audience a lot better than before. He steps out into the crowd to perform small miracles such as Linking Finger Rings and a cool glass-plate penetration with a child. I don't recall seeing these before and they really bring the level of the show way up. He also has one of the single hottest illusions on the strip or anywhere else - one of the dancers appears magically inside of a small plexiglass box filled with water. When she appears, she's not wearing much, and it's very impressive. The show works for families but has a decidedly adult flare to it, with some of the jokes a bit risque and a few swear words thrown in for good measure. The final 10 minutes of the show are just wonderful. The loose theme that has been running through the show culminates in a very touching sequence involving members of Wyrick's family. Finally, we see the Lear Jet appearance and finally, there is meaning as to why one might make a jet aircraft appear on a Las Vegas stage. Check it out when you're here. The Tickets 2 Nite box office at Showcase / Coca Cola World usually has discounts. --Jack |

Steve Wyrick a good performer? I simply do not believe it. That man is no performer.
He may be able to memorize a few jokes and point at some boxes, but a performer he is not. As for the water tank, it was acquired in rather an underhanded way from my very good friend (who invented it) and the situation is being dealt with.
It's all in the reflexes.

LOL meauxfeaux, cmon good things here to be said! Do we question the person that you do a show with in AC? Crazy as it seems after the show people liked you better than him and he does the whole illusion show!!! Never the less. I Seen Steve's show a few months ago in Vegas and last year in AC. In AC last year I think I could have gotten a 10th grader to put on a better show with a thumb tip, but I have to agree whoever they hired to help Steve did a hell of a job! His new show is MUCH MUCH better and only in time will he get better. Now as for the illusion, Meauxfeaux correct me if I am wrong but did I see that same illusion in your show (Franz Show)? I know Franz showed it backstage. just wondering.

Steve's show isn't perfect. There are segments I think should be removed completely. There are areas of the script that still need to be trimmed, or eliminated. And, in my opinion, he's doesn't come off as very genuine most of the time. He doesn't dress for his age either.
That being said, the show has improved leaps and bounds from what it was at Sahara. Now it's watchable, and in many parts even quite entertaining. In one or two cases, amazing. I'm sorry to hear the water tank acquisition was not done properly. But it's a cool trick, and the girl coming up out of the tank, all soaking wet, in a small bikini, is just hot. It wins hottest illusion in Las Vegas, hands down. --Jack |

From the time Steve was at the Lady Luck to now, he has improved a great deal.... that cannot be disputed. Everytime he has moved properties the show has gotten better, and he has grown as a performer. Whether or not he can improve more or what magicians think of his show can be debated all day, as with most show/performers.
Steve is a great business man and I personally know he works hard to improve his show and himself as a performer. I can think of many people, that once they got a show in vegas they coasted, only to find themselves unemployed. The fact he has been in vegas + or - 10 years says a lot. The water tank trick...wow, I wouldn't touch that conversation with a ten foot appearing pole.....ugly situation is especially when you are friends with eveyone involved. Who's to blame or the details don't matter.... The free lesson from this situation for all us magicians, is this, whether buying or selling, deals big and small, friends or not, get everything in writing. Handshakes, good intentions and promises don't mean much sometimes. This is a business and should be handled as such. |

Well, what exactly happened with the water tank trick? I guess I have never heard the story before.

I saw the show on a trip to Las Vegas a month ago. It is excruciatingly bad; this guy is so up his own behind it’s embarrassing.
It was mentioned that this guy has been in Vegas for 10 years. I think it should be noted that he has poured an awful lot of his own money into this and he is not in demand by the properties on the Strip like Lance Burton or some of the other performers who are sought after by the Casino’s. He is leasing the area where his theatre is inside the miracle mile shopping centre in exactly the same way Starbucks and all the other retailers are. I think the saddest part about it all, is that if you put the money and those incredible illusions with a performer who had a bit of charisma and didn’t alienate his audience you could make a legend in the world of Magic. Just my thoughts, feel free to comment..... |

I've seen SW act before at the Aladdin, great illusions(Appearing Hummer,Appearing Lear Jet,walking thru 747 Turbine- similar to windshear,etc..)great show on the strip. not to mention the Hot girls!. showmanship wise,Lance or Copperfield are way better. just my opinion.

Yea the tank story is not a fun one. Let it go.
As for being "better" I would find it hard to imagine he could have gotten any worse so it is not shocking. It is not a good thing to have gotten better, and still be bad! Ouch indeed.

Interesting... I guess this so called problem about the water tank shall remain forever a mystery. Which makes me wonder why it was ever brought up in the first place.
Nevertheless, the show has improved considerably since it was over at the Sahara. --Jack |

It gives you a lot more control over what you do - wasn't Lance Burton pretty much ordered by casino management to cut down on the "smaller" sleight of hand stuff and do more big "Vegas-style" illusions? Just about any contracted performer can find himself shut down if corporate HQ in New York or London decides one day to "go in a new direction" or whatever. And, keeping your own business going for ten years isn't easy. (Disclaimer: I've never met or seen S.W. & don't know anybody who has.) |

Magicians can say what they want about a performer usullaly it's just sour grapes. The bottom line is Steve is working and on the Stip at that. I saw his show and the audience loved it. So, I guess the bottom line is this, is he a magicians magician? No. Does the commercial audience like him? Yes. So who pays his salary? Magicians? No. The commercial audience? Yes. Seems like a no brainer to me. Oh, by the way I enjoyed the show.

So now I need to get your position straight just to clarify.
Any time a person does not like a performance it is automatically sour grapes and jealousy right? Nobody can dislike a performance and be right about it. Nobody can disagree and be entitled to their opinion? Someone having enough money from family, to keep a show going is fine, the show must be GREAT no matter what right? The show is being done, so it is great and anyone who does not like it is jealous? I am just trying to clarify. When someone who is a musician does not like a certain artist, then it is sour grapes right? Automatically anyone and everyone is good no matter what? I guess I find this position hard to accept as I am not jealous, do not do a stage illusion show, never wanted to do one, and still REALLY find it boring. I had to wake the guy next to me and he wasn't a magician. I just want you to tell me who is jealous and under what circumstances a show might actually not be very good. Only when you say so obviously right? I am not trying to fight with you on this, but trying to see what exactly it is you are trying to say. It seems to me that the position is not really defendable.
