This news item might be of use to some on here in their presentations as perhaps stating an example of what was once thought to be impossible seems to now be possible, etc.

A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light - an achievement that would undermine our entire understanding of space and time.

According to Einstein's special theory of relativity, it would require an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at more than 186,000 miles per second.

However, Dr Gunter Nimtz and Dr Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached a key tenet of that theory.

The pair say they have conducted an experiment in which microwave photons - energetic packets of light - travelled "instantaneously" between a pair of prisms that had been moved up to 3ft apart.

Being able to travel faster than the speed of light would lead to a wide variety of bizarre consequences.

For instance, an astronaut moving faster than it would theoretically arrive at a destination before leaving.

The scientists were investigating a phenomenon called quantum tunneling, which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws.

Dr Nimtz told New Scientist magazine: "For the time being, this is the only violation of special relativity that I know of."

Heck, next they will open up a worm hole! Yea Baby!

Does this mean that I will be able to go back and warn myself not to do something. Or maybe do something!

Well all we need now is Zephran Cochran, and the rest is history, sort of.

I love the way they make a leap from microwave photons to an astronaut. Do I smell Hype? Smile

I was simply impressed with the microwave photons, they really didn't need to make any conjecture.

A great piece of information to add a slant to ones performance, many thanks Alexandre.

It's reported in some depth this week's New Scientist. Two right-angled double prisms, hypotenuses back to back with a 1 metre gap between them. Shine a beam of microwaves at right angles in through the adjacent face of one. The photons bounce internally on the hypotenuse and back out through the opposite face. some, however, "tunnel" through the gap between prisms instantaneously, enter the other prism at 45 degrees to the hypotenuse and emerge through the opposite face. The beams both arrive at their detectors at the same time, though the tunnelling photons should arrive later.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but New Scientist also reports a much more mundane interpretation of the observations too. Smile

I still think it's a good idea for patter, though.
