Hello All,
I am trying to get my hands on a Miser's Dream Goblet with the same concept as the type McBride uses on his stage magic video series. I have seen at least one advertised but it does not mention the method so I am skepticl to get it. I know the method I am particularly looking for. Can anyone help me out, and let me know if there are any places out there where I can get one...otherwise I will try to have to make one....thanks |

His tapes describe making ones own...
That is if you are speaking of the smaller stemmed goblet similar to what Curtis Kam uses in The Goblet... Don't think it would be fair to share in the open forum as the idea did not come from me... Though I am tool challenged there are a lot of simple solutions..even for this nearly normal one. One of the perks of using my magic at the schools is access to talented shop folks... How many types of Miser's Dream Goblet are there currently in the market? I would like to explore on the different versions too. Any info would be appreciated too.

As far as I know there is nothing special with the Goblet. Just find one you like and make the modification to it.

I get most of my materials for making this type of stuff at the goodwill. I wouldn't pass up a store-bought one if it looked right for the purpose, but at a second hand place you get to look through 100's of different styles/sizes/types. Don't forget to grab two if they have them. It's so nice to *leave* an ungimmicked one out so people can appreciate your sleight of hand

Abbotts used to sell the "Visible Miser's Dream" a fairly straight-sided large tumbler with a nice gaff and place to "steal" the load, all built into the glass.

I love places like Goodwill for props! We have a Thrift/Junk/Wonderment store near by called "A-1 Packrats" where I always seem to score all sorts of gems for between 5 and 10 bucks per trip! I keep hoping to turn up a vintage set of Tarbell's or the like that someone tossed because it was grandpa's and it was taking up space!

Bed Bath and Beyond, Linens and Things, or World Market all have numerous goblet options, some metal. You can find a goblet with a cavity in the base for a load. Check the clearance sections. The one I purchased is actually designed for a toothbrush holder. Sounds strange, but it looks great. It is a polished decorative metal cup, and when turned upside down, the base is scooped out for an easy load.

Harris is right! The Goodwill and Thrift stores often have glasses and replacement parts for older tricks too. (Don't forget fish bowls!)

I just wanted to acknowledge your mentioning the thrift stores... This nearly normal one was just seconding the motion... What great places to pick up things at a bargain... I have to watch out for my OCD buying at those low prices... Lots of stuff I use and some have been in the magic dungeon for a while...I like to go down there at times rather than look for something to "buy". Harris

Is Miser's Dream looks good and entertaining if performed without music?

IMHO it is too mints in one...in other words it can take on different emotion, theme, personality of the character depending on choice, tempo, type of instrument.
I have used things as: 1. Single Harmonica 2. Kazoo 3. Mouth Mosquito Whistle (1 is interesting...2 facing in opposite directions is an alien..3 is too wild most of the time for me...) 4. Money from Pink Floyd 5. Jazz 6. Blues 7. Piano player improvising on the spot What have you used....find out what works in you and the particular venue you are working with. Harris
