I recently went to my local Coin Collector Shop today and picked up 4 MORGAN Silver Dollars. He had me pick from his 1921 collection (cheaper in value) and I couldn't find a close match in color of the few he had. Some were slightly tinged silver. Others were brownish. But no 4 had the same tinted color. He placed 4 coins in a silver cleaning mixture and now they are the same brightened silver color and I bought them. But now I feel all 4 coins are TOO silver.
Any idea how I can tarnish them a bit?? Also, how can I make them "softer" and quieter when slid onto each other?

As for the tarnish part, just keep em all together and handle em and they will get old uniformly in no time. I've also heard that sticking them in your sock and wearing them for a day may speed it up some but it really only takes a few days of excessive handling to give them some patina.
Daryl suggests using a whet stone (for sharpening knives and tools) and working them in a figure 8 motion rather than a circular motion for uniform wear. Use light oil or water for lubrication and rinse your stone to get the silver particles out of the stone! Then again David Roth can wear away surface as well as edges with a simple eraser! Good luck! |

Salby,
you may want to check this thread: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;start=0 I must say that I got very good results with the technique described...and you don't have to fear about: if you don't like the result, there you go again at your will! ...and, no, there isn't any black residue on the fingers... Hope this help, |

Salby...
I have been down this road.. If you want soft coins just buy soft coins you can sand down your coins but they will never look natural... Just go to the coin shop, hunt around and find 4 or 5 soft coins that match, it is really the best way to do it. Any other way is a waste of time and money because you will jusr ruin your coins. Thanks. Shawn.

Totally agree, it's not worth the hassle. Look on eBay or like shawn says, go and buy them from a coin shop.

Nah this can be done but really only for perfectionist and will take more money.
You'll need a diamond sharpening stone(key piece), a dremel, some diff grade sanding sponge blocks and then some chemicals but it is definitely doable, I have some post on this made awhile back. |

deep them in bleach for a few second and they'll get dark, the longer you leave them the darker they get, then buy the thinnest sand paper at the warehouse and sand them, placing the sand paper on a flat surface and the coin on it use you'll finger on the top of the coin and go round round round till your decired look. I do have other tips, but I'm gonna hold them for my future DVDs. WU. |

If you want to darken and tone the coins the same way that less scrupulous coin dealers would do it (ie, the most convincing way), you want a substance called Liver of Sulphur, it comes in a solid and liquid form. It's essentially just a concentration of sulfates. You'll want to test out the concentration first, however, because it will blacken metal in seconds if it's too strong. You just want to apply it to the points that you want to darken

I just did my Morgans in bleach this afternoon followed by putting some silver polish on a cloth over a hard surface (tile) and worked in a figure 8 motion to shine the high points. My Morgans are pretty soft but now with the highlights they look sharp but don't talk at all! I'm thinking I should do my Walkers next!

I wasn't kidding with the toothpaste. Its all I have been using for 7 years. Makes the coins a lot nicer and soften them as well.

P.s forgot to say if you use an eraser that shines the coin up (well gets rid of any dirt you don't want).

Worked great for me magicblademan and there shouldn't be any reason it won't work on the ] either! I know toothpaste works well but now ya gotta wonder if it takes away all that grime from silver, what's it doing to the enamel of your teeth?!?!?

Paste is best but even the gel has abrasives and it leaves your coins minty fresh!
