Does anyone know where Osterlind's Steel Blindfold can be purchased?

Bill -
I am under the impression that Jeff Busby was the manufacturer and also wrote a booklet as well. I have also been looking for a place to get one as well as getting a copy of the book. Carl. |

I have tried Busby at times, and found him (and his company) to be, shall we say, less than cooperative and forthcoming. (Believe me, I am FAR from alone here!) However, Dave Powell has a similar blindfold that seems to work just as well, available from most dealers.

There is a nice and inexpensive steel blind fold at http://www.magicsmith.com
It is called “X-ray Blindfold”. I don’t know who makes it and it is black not shiney stainless steal. Frankly, all of the steel blindfolds work about the same, and $20.00 USD isn’t all that much.

Black over black tape covers a lot, so I prefer to avoid a shiny blindfold. The shadow of a peeling tape becomes invisible if the blindfold is black, and the tape ditto. Besides, some will think you use the refelctive surface to advantage.
Paul Alberstat is absolutely right, by the way.

I have two. Would be willing to sell one to the first person to come up with $300.
Otherwise, it is worth keeping... just in case. E-mail request to gerry@mentalist.com |

Since this is kind of about blindfolds and not just the Osterlind Blindfold, and it is something that Dick would be the first one to remind people is that Any effect that you are doing with a blindfold should be as strong to your audience if you did not use a blindfold. The blindfold should just add to the effect. Far too many magicians forget about that and focus on the blindfold. Effect is everything, a blindfold is just window dressing not the trick.

Paul is right on the money. The use of a blindfold should say: even if I could see as well as you, there is no way I could know ...

Unless you are doing a sightless vision act
But otherwise I agree with Paul and Ford. Re the Dave Powell blindfold, it is a copy of the one that used to be put out by The Supreme Magic Company. The Osterlind Blindfold is slightly different to the latter, it can be placed on a spectator. Paul Hallas |

The book Dynamic Mysteries by Osterland details some nice effects while using a blindfold. (I can't believe the price of the Osterland BF compared to some of the othe, just as effective, though much cheaper blindfolds, though....)

Hi Bill,
The Osterlind Blindfold is excellent. The price quoted earlier (300 bucks) seems a little dear though. I got mine for $60 (admittedly 14 years ago) and consider it an amazing bargin. As with all Osterlinds products, it is the result of testing under Real World conditions. Its method is different from the usual "down the nose" glimpse and will fool pretty much anyone. Depending on the routine however, a simple cloth an tape job will work very well. Most of the "top names" today use a similar blindfold for Q+A and do very well by it. If you haven't seen Ray Noran's act you are missing something... I think the sightless vision thing - "seeing with the fingertips" - is pretty much dead and the blindfold nowadays is used to "prove" that sight is not a possibility. Again, it depends on the routine. A blindfold can't help but strengthen even the lamest effect... Ernie |

While on the subject of blindfolds, do others on this forum face the same problem as I do : I use reading glasses (age related short sightedness).
Question is how does one use the glasses whilst blindfolded? Glen Falkenstein suggests a way out in his teach-in video, but I'm not sure his method can be used with a metal blindfold. |

Speaking of the price of the Osterlind blindfold as compared to the much cheaper ones, I cannot agree that the others are just as effective (by the way, mine was $120.00 US). The reason I bought the Osterling blindfold was because I had one of the cheaper ones. And the method in the cheaper one seems fairly obvious to the casual observer. The Osterlind blindfold takes care of that because it is simply better constructed. To me, that is worth the money. Putting one of the cheaper ones on a spectator is very risky. Putting the Osterlind blindfold on a spectator is very safe as long as you follow the instructions.
To me, the Osterlind blindfold is way ahead of the cheaper ones in quality and effectiveness. Just my opinion. Best regards, Tony Razzano

Contact lenses. Wear them and glasses that have regular "glass" in them which makes you look blind without them on and so with blindfold on you look really helpless.

A brilliant, RARE and very little known system calls "EYES OF INDIA"! 6 pages published and commercialized by U.F. Grant, many years behind.
Here it is the effect: "Commitee of spectadors is invided you step forward. They place piece of dough or clay to over each the performers eyes and then encase the perform head in thick towels, wond in all direstions. When this is completed the performer head is completely obscured, having the appearance of mummy head. With his vision thus completely out off, the to performer may proced you demonstrate series of amazing tests, proving his clain you eyeless vision." Would be this the same system that became famous KUDA BUX??? This wonderful system was disclosed to me by the great argentine mentalist Pedro Christofersen, in 1981.
