In Center Tear Teach In Lee Earle suggests that if you ask a participant to think of a "Television Personality" that will choose a man more often than a woman because men dominate the role of "television personality".
Is there a term for this phenomena? |

It's a type of priming. I don't think the reason is correct, though. I deal with priming extensively in Naked Mentalism fro a whole range of subjects.

Yeah - or you could say what the mentalist is doing is priming the participant, and the spec is ... drawing on stereotypes?

I think there's also research that shows that if you have someone pick a number between 1 and 10 that 7 comes up much more frequently than any other number.

Could it be based on the fact that the average man is more "worldly" than the average woman and therefore easier. to deceive?

Well, rest his soul in peace, but it's a little more than well known that Merv Griffin had quite the dress and high heels collection.

If the domain of TV personalities is perceived to be that overtly male dominated, imagine the same question asked of radio!
Even at the local market level, male personalities still dominate the radio industry to a staggering degree in both actual profile positions and public perception. Of course, as an 'angle' for a routine, the optics on this would likely be far more transparent, at the risk of the much higher 'hit' rate. |
