Has anyone ever constructed or come across a list of generic "Effect Themes". Such as...
Appear Disappear Levitate Transform Transpose Penetration Dis-assemble Etc... I'm talking the very basic "underlying" effects of every trick known to man. (The list wouldn't go on too long before you started overlapping. Best, Clock |

Try "Magic in Theory" by Peter Lamont and Richard Wiseman.
They breakdown effects into these major catagories: - Appearance - Vanish - Transposition - Transformation - Penetration - Restoration - Extraoridinary feats (feats that show superhuman but not supernatural feats like memorizing an entire deck of cards or laying on a bed of nails) - Telekinesis - ESP They go into further detail. I would give a review of the book, but I only read a few chapters and then put it down when I got busy, and just haven't picked it back up again.

Blackstone made a list like this:
Animation Anti-Gravity Escapes Invulnerability Optical Illusions Penetration Production Restoration Sympethatic Reaction Time Control Transformation Transposition Vanish You could add things like Mentalism.... But it's a good list I think. EVI |

Just remember, it's not a list cut into stone and it IS possible to still come up with new effects not found on anyone's list. However, it is most difficult.
The chief advantage of a list of effects is in helping you to routine a show so that you don't follow one disappearance with another and another, unless, of course, that is your purpose. There's no law that says you can't do it, but the list helps make you aware that you are doing it. Write down the tricks in your show and then compare them to a list of effects to see if maybe you could separate similar effects a little better for some variety.

Both are extremely insightful books for creating stronger effects and fortifying the ones you're currently performing! |
