Please send all of your 'defective' cups to me.

I know you are kidding but nobody is complaining about the cups we just need a ball smaller than 2 inches and bigger than 1.5 inches something like 1,5/8 or 1,3/4.

we can always go back to vernon's routine with this cups.

If you can make a big enough order Steve Goshman(magic by Gosh) might consider doing it. It doesn't hurt to ask.
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

In the days BEFORE GOSHMAN the way to go was to buy sponges for the bath at the dime store and get out your scissors and start cutting.

However, right now I find the 2-inch sponges I have (they seem to be super soft) are working just fine.

BSutter and I were talking about this routine last night for a while. It seems that one needs to take on a bit of a theatric (read: Italian) persona to help assist with the dislodging of the balls.

If your whole routine in gentle and calm, then suddenly you whip the cup onto the table, you will be telegraphing your secrets to all around you. However, if you play-act a bit and make your gestures large, talk with your hands, & use larger hand and arm movements to break down the PC barriers of comfortable distance a bit, then the dislodging move can be done undetected.

I'm certainly not suggesting that you need to be rude, or obnoxious...just a tad "larger than life". I watch Johnny on the Stevens video and see him in this light. He is charismatic, warm, and yet theatric with his movements. In other words, flawless Smile

I have said a few times that I love these cups above all others and that this routine is by far my favorite effect. So, perhaps I'm too invested emotionally to have an unbiased opinion on the subject...

You're right. You have to see the way Johnny Paul does this to understand the total dynamics. And like anything else, you have to PRACTICE and PRACTICE CORRECTLY.

His way is different when doing his top change, the bill tear, etc. A great lesson in how to do things is to study this man.

Chad,

To grasp the essence of the routine puts one on the road to enlightenment.

The path you have selected is the correct one, may it bring you many rewards.

Get the video (maybe now DVD) from http://www.stevensmagic.com and see the REAL WORK. If you have not seen it, before you look at the "how" segment, I'll bet you he fools the pants off you as to where the first ball comes from.

I found that 1 1/2" Super Softs blow up to just about the perfect size when wet and then rung out. The only problem being evaporation if one is doing several sets.

I am currently using the cups as "period" cups in my Renaissance act.

Pete also came up with a nice move that disproves the actual method.

These cups were made from actual copy of Johnny Paul's own set that are now owned by Gary Darwin. Gary kindly let me take the measurements.

Sorry to take so long to respond, but I wanted to experiment a little more with the various techniques listed on this thread.

I am having the best results with the 1-1/2" Supersoft balls that have been wetted to expand. I squeeze out as much water as I can and then roll the balls between my palms to help ensure that they are as round as I can get them. I plan to keep using this process.

I have very good success with the dislodge, but the "pick-up" can be a litle dicey. When doing the "pick-up", I have found that it helps with either the 1-1/2" or 2" balls to give a little twist to the cup as you set it on the ball. I believe this compensates for any lack of roundness in the ball.

I think that some failure to either pick up the ball or dislodge it is to be expected. If you notice the Johnny Paul video, he simply uses the device of encouraging the ball to pass and slams it again as though it was a normal occurance. Similar situation with a failed pick up; Pete Biro developed his "feint" to sometimes show that the ball didn't pass, so why not just use the failed pick up by acting as though this was not unusual and encourage the ball. I believe the key to dealing with either of these situations is to stay relaxed and maintain your rhythm.

Although I've not performed the routine I would agree with Dwight.

As the 1 1/2" Super Softs wetted and pressed out seem to work the best, has anyone figured out a good way to keep them moist during long performace period?

I still belive we need a ball between 1,1/2 and 2 inches, however the 1,1/2 ball is more workable than the 2 inches.

jeff dial: I do not think they will get dry even in a long routine, if you want to reset them for another performance may be a good idea to get a bottle of eye drops full of water and pour on the balls about 5 drops or so.
