I know that everyone and his brother have stabbed themselves with "Spike". What are some other dangerous tricks? Obviously the bullet catch. And I remember seeing footage of a buried alive trick gone wrong. What else?

I'm not sure this discussion belongs in 'The Little Darlings' without a bit more specificity.
We can toss around a thousand tricks that are dangerous in general, but who's gonna do a bullet catch at a kiddie show? I'd suggest posting on tricks that are likely to be performed at children's shows, but have dangers that you might not initially suspect, or dangers that are too often overlooked. For instance, in this section of the Café, we often disagree whenever anyone broaches the subject 'should you do fire tricks at a kiddie show?' I have always said 'no', because of the obvious temptation for kids to imitate what they saw, but also because sooner or later the fire or flammables are going to ruin someone's living-room rug (or turn your rolling table into a potential firebomb for the rest of the day's shows). On the other hand, there's the safety policies that go too far - like this week's news story about a British clown who keeps being told to leave the balloons at home because somebody in the crowd might possibly be allergic to latex. |

One trick that needs to be watched very carefully is PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY as there are a number of adults and children that are allergic to peanuts etc.

I just read on here that Mouth Coils are dangerous!
(I do say that with sarcasm.) Everything has Risk involved. Its a matter of knowing the comfort level of yourself, the audience and those who hire you. I think simple common sense can tell you what can be done and what should just be left at home. Brad

The most dangerous is "Bullet Catching." Several professionals have died this way.

In real life, I've had a Milson-Worth chopper malfunction on a kid's arm. Last time I ever used it, except on myself or a close adult friend. Too bad -- beautiful prop.

Don't use cards because the potential of paper cuts is very real and you can slip on one and fall down. Avoid rope magic, it could get tangled and you are strangled. Silks? Choke hazard, same with anything small enough to get into your mouth. If it is solid it could cause a blunt force injury or you might trip over it. If it is loud or flashy could cause a seizure. Avoid any mentalism as it may push the mentally challenged over the edge. Oh yeah, and the presence of a jar that says Peanut Butter can kill, they use it to destroy tanks in some countries.

I have heard of people being impaled on "Smash and Stab" and think I'm going to stick to the one that uses eggs. Does anyone know if this really happened, or is it just a magicians' urban myth?

I've had a head chopper disintegrate around the spectators head. That was extremely scary, but luckily the spectator was okay, just shaken up (as was I).
I've had an arm-chopper go wrong three times. Once was with an old lady, who was very forgiving, and the others were with four year old girls who burst into tears. For the old lady and one of the girls, their wrists were so thin, that the blade didn't do that 'special move' and just came straight down. The blade is never sharp enough to go through, it just traps the hand to the stock. It hurts. That's when I learnt that there has to be some meat on the bone in order for the trick to work. The third time, the girl decided that as the blade was coming down, she wanted out, and used her other hand to hold onto the guillotine and put her fingers in the bottom hole as she grabbed the stock. That was a bad thing to do. She wasn't seriously hurt, but it did make me look bad. I still use the arm chopper to finish every show, but I've retired the head-guillotine and only bring it out for special occasions. I once set of the smoke alarms with my pyrotechnics and caused the fire department to come out to a booking. That was a nightmare scenario, but hey, at least I can say that I produced three fire-engines in a puff of smoke! Steve |

The most dangerous trick ever performed (in my opinion), and where the performer survived, was Lance Burton's escape from the roller coaster track. This was not the usual trick where you escape the the first 30 seconds, and then wait for the clock to time out before you appear. Lance apparently had a problem with his chains, or miscalculated the time, and jumped free about one second before he was hit. He came within a fraction of a second of losing one of his feet.
