I have just got this after reading some of the good reports about it on these boards.I love it so simple yet so clever.I was wondering what your patter for this effect is.I read that someone said it was a scarecrow for kids which is great but i'm after a more scary story, any ideas?

You want spooky? Look at the name of the prop -- it's a voodoo figure. Consider how people craft these figures (often incorporating a strand of hair or other element from a particular person) with the hope of influencing the life of someone around them. Most well known, perhaps, is the idea that if this object were stuck with a pin, the person it represents would feel pain. But consider if that person were motionless. Dead. Could the voodoo practitioner use this to make him arise, as a zombie? Let's see. (Concentrate, and the doll arises of his own accord.)
Of course, the idea of a man-made figure that comes to life pervades so many of our myths (and subsequent literature), that thousands of presentations are possible. Consider Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein story. Go further back in time, and examine the mythic yiddish figure, the Golem (Peter Marucci's excellent presentation of this is at http://www.online-visions.com). The list goes on and on.

I read this ideal somewhere. Take your lighter and blacken it a little to make it look old.

The method used is a little alarming when you first find out about it. However, if handled gently it is not bad at all. It is probably not something that I would do over and over as a tablehopping effect, but as a part of a small program, I think it's quite intriguing.

One solution is to wear a glove. As long as you justify it with the story, it could work.
I have the same problem. I would use mine much more if I found a great solution. Dave |

It sounds like you guys are actually drawing blood. The only time I did that was when I first got it and didn't know any better. Lesson learned fast.

You might want to view my "Raising a Golem" thread, which deals with a new, non-painful method. I'm still debating whether to market this or make it freely available.

I use a voodoo story, I tell people that because it is made from a dried plant, it has a spirit. I do the effect as I tell them, that it is a sort of practice doll so I can perfect my skills before raising the dead.
People really love this & it is probably the most requested effect that I do, it really freaks people out. |

Ted,
I am interested and would appreciate any info you care to impart. I can see it now--Ted Lesley's Okito Voodoo Doll effect in his Cabaret Magic sequel. (BTW, both DVDs are excellent and had me scrambling over to L&L for Ted Lesley after-market items. L&L's catalog is winging its way to my address as we speak.) Thanks again for any info on using the voodoo doll. Mike

I wanted to voice my absolute enthusiasm for the Okito Voodoo doll.
Yes, it looks much better if your blacken/scorch the "limbs" and body a bit. I used Higgens india ink to further blacken the ends and hide the gimmick (I also used Super Glue to secure it better) I also spattered it gently with a very deep and dried looking "blood" colored ink mix, to suggest the lurid history of the frightening fetish. Experiment finding the fleshiest and least artery filled part of EITHER HAND (hint) and you'll be fine. One mmust bleed for one's art, after all. Explain how and where you obtained this curious thing. A Suggestion: Write a Magickal sigil of a small sheet of flash paper. Explain what this will do, reanimate the straw doll, ( which you have proven to be a more thing - a piece of straw) indicating contact with the dead beloved etc....Gently lay the magical spell over the doll. Ignite and watch the dead doll awaken and rise amidst flames and floating ashes!!!! |

Glue a *SMALL* cotton ball to the bottom of each of the doll's legs.
That way, you can pass the doll out for examination. I have done this dozens of times, and no-one has seen the gimmick. Even people who have seen the effect before can't find the gimmick. Those that have this will understand what I mean.

I love my Okito. I can't believe anyone could be wimpy about it's method, it's really not that bad. If it hurts a lot, you're not doing it right.
Excellent tip regarding the cotton ball !! Just as long as it doesn't look like a pom-pom or that the doll is wearing fuzzy bunny slippers ;-) What's the scotchguard for, exactly, Candini ? Just to keep it "together" I guess ?
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Yeah I think so. I was thinking it would be better just to age naturally like T. Timber but the instructions with mine said to do it so I did it:)
Im baffled about the problems with the method. If bleeding is involved, that is bad (infections etc). Im as wimpy as it gets with pain but this is really a nonissue. I took mine out and it worked immediately. I have to actually tone it down now. Women get pretty scared and even though they know Im a magi, one in particular is really super paranoid at my office job. Can't wait to use this on my strolling gig. I haven't done the cotton feets yet but have it ready. So far, not many want to handle the thing:)
