Pizza Restaurants are at the bottom of my list because people use their hands to pick up the pizza. I use a lot of props they hold in their hand. I would feel uncomfortable approaching a guest (before their serving) because they feel uncomfortable picking up the pizza after touching my props. Some will go back in the restroom to re-wash their hands before being served the food.

I like them myself because - well, hey, there's free pizza.

What's the point of this thread??? Is it just me, or is it missing a point???
That was just a completely random thought. Seriously...LOL! |

I've never done magic at a pizza place, mainly because they don't get much business here (people are more for having it delivered instead). But I think it'd be best to stick with effects they don't have to touch anything, especially after they have eaten. But then again, I don't think too many people are too worried about their hands being dirty from a playing card. I may be wrong though.

Think of how easy it would be to find a card? Look for the one with Pizza Sauce on the card!

Mike was just wondering if any of the rest of us who do perform for the pizza-eating crowd (which I do, and have for over 11 years) find this same situation. I wouldn't do anything sponge anything for 'em, just due to the sponge's natural tendency to absorb anything. The most I'll put into their hands is a coin.

A lot of people are concerned about germs... some to the point that they are not willing to shake hands. The thought of handling something that has obviously been in many different hands is probably even less appealing to them.
Regarding the flip side... Places that serve Buffalo chicken wings, BBQ, or the myriad of bar foods (onion rings, etc.) are equally as bad. Kids' night in places like that will destroy your props. Cards, sponge balls, and silks barely last the night. Coins become impossible to palm after a few tables. Adults are usually conscious enough to attempt to wipe their hands. Kids will grab anything right after they've stuck their hands up to the wrist in ketchup. Any place where food is more handled by fingers than utensils, I'd probably rethink my set list these days.

I had pizza restaurants in the past. I always pictured myself giving out those sealed wipes when I'm finished. If I get a pizza restaurant again, I'm going to ask for a handful of them so I can pass them out.
I have approached kids with some type of sauce on their hands before. Before I perform the sponge rabbit trick with them, I lay a unused napkin on top of their palm so the sponge rabbit will not get wet. As they close their hand, there is no problem. |

I played a pizza place for two years while in college. It was a natural to perform before the food arrived and not after. I never had any problems of which you speak. Yes my props eventually got dirty and had to be replaced. They always will. Boo hoo. If you control your audience, then you determine who, when, and if they touch any of your props. If you don't, then step back behind the counter and start serving pizzas.

Did Pizza Hut for over 10 years and I currently do an upscaled pizza restaurant. No dirtier than any other restaurant.
Something I do at ALL my restaurants is I wash my sponge products in a Salon scented alcohol. Do be careful of your dyed items.

I've done quite a few kids parties where the parents wanted a performance while the kids ate, like pizza wouldn't be fun enough by itself?
Glad I've never had to fight for a slice of the pie with you guys. I just haven't kneaded the dough that much yet. But I guess I could learn some cheesy tricks. Until today, I had no idea what parlor magic was.....

Ted, I see you do know how to spread the sauce more than double the pepperoni. Because of your theory with words, they may need you in the "Food For Thought" section.

During the late 1960's and up through the 1970's, Pizza Parlors were HUGE in our area. They had 2-4 musicians working, and sometimes they had a staff magician that came around to do balloon animals for the kids and magic for the grownups. I worked in bands and as a magician in Pizza Parlors for about 10 years or so.
The main thing with the magic is to do things that either won't be harmed by pizza sauce or that you can do right after they place their order. If they hang around after they have eaten, there are easy ways to get them to wipe their hands before they handle the cards. Just use a line like this: "Before I have you take a card, just to make things difficult for me, why don't you wipe your fingers? That way, I won't have to look for the card with the red spots on it!" If you deliver the line with a smile on your face, they will understand. The key is how the line is delivered. But don't expect a regular deck to last more than a couple of days.
