Hi!
Long time ago I have read here in the Magic Café that there are Tapes/DVDs available from the Chavez Studio of Magic. Does anybody know what kind of material is taught on these DVDs? Cards, Coins, Balls and Cigarettes? Is there also a section on Jumbo Coins? Is there anybody who owns these DVDs and can tell more about them? Who is the teacher on these DVDs? Greetings 3mjo Germany |

Contact Dale Salwak at salwak@adelphia.net and ask him. Dale is the current operator of the Chavez School.
Cheers!

Let's hope so, Cody. You can also email Dale so he can bring you the materials - if they are for sale.

On sale and available are two different things. I am thinking that if Dale would sell them, tapes/DVDs would most probably accompany course materials. These may not be for sale to just anyone.

As a graduate of Chavez I would be very upset if these were just sold. I took the course in 1996 and there were no tapes or dvds. It was all printed material. When you get this material you have to agree not to give it or sell it.
I would be surprised if the course is released. There was an at-home version available also. That may be what you have heard about. Tim |

I am pretty sure that the course has not been put on video or dvd nor will it be. Dale did update many of the teaching materials that needed to be redone. He remains teaching the course by home study or in person.

I can not speak for Dale Salwak who operates the west coast studio but I do know that Chris Jakway who operates the studio for the mid-west and east coast. (Yes Neil Foster's studio is still in operation in Battle Creek, Michigan). He does not and will not put the course on dvd. Learning manipulation is an art and skill - learning from dvd is much like learning how to be a sculpter via video - it loses something in the translation. It is something that requires a personal attention. Matter of fact, Chris does not even offer the course in a printed format.

When I requested material from Dale he let me know that I would have to come to him to be taught. I was wanting something mailed to me so I could learn from home. Stick with the Tarbell Books if you want that. I'm sure I'd be better off being taught by Dale but I couldn't afford the trip.

I studied under Neil Foster. Of all the material I've learned over the years the Chavez program offered the best of everything. Having been taught by Neil made it even better. You're not just learning moves (several of which I'd never use in performance) but discipline, stage craft and stuff that take most people a lifetime to discover. Neil set the bar high and I'm certain that Dr. Dale is even tougher. I say this having had the opportunity of Dale auditing my class while attending Chavez.
Today, there are so many opportunities for master classes featuring great magicians. Yet, most classes give only a taste of piecemealed ideas, often falling short of my overall expectation. I say this out of experience having seen the best of both worlds. Set your priorities and try to learn from experienced professionals. If I had to choose between a hundred lectures or Chavez, I'd choose the later. Believe me when I say this - cost isn't the obstacle - doing nothing is.
POOF!

When Neil Foster teached the classes, it was a 22 week course. You had to go to Colon, MI and live there. You would learn sections, then practice on your own. Then return to show what you have learned and learn more.
When the course is done, you have an act in Billard Balls, Cards, Thimbles, Cigarettes, and Coins. Each section is an act. It touches on Basic Dove productions. Neil wanted his students to be creative, so many come out with entirely different acts then what was taught in the course. Many new tricks were invented by some creative students. Back in the 1960's, I called Marian Chevez about the course. She said she had just finished with a student and she was going to Las Vegas to see his act. She was quick to state that this is not the norm. A graduating student going directly to a Vegas show. As far as I know Dale does offer the mail order course. He may have stopped, but that was his original reason for taking over the course. Nice to see we have so many graduates of Chavez's School. I was beginning to think there weren't any magicians on the Café site at all. |

I'm a Chavez graduate, studied under Dale Salwak. Unfortunately, he does not sell videos/dvd's that are being used in the course. The only way to learn is to enroll thru the course or home study.

No dvds are available. I graduated in '91 under Chris Jakway and the printed material was no longer given to students. I was lucky enough to pick up a set in the collection of a graduate who had passed away. Chavez is hands on training. I moved to Battlecreek, MI and lived there a year to take the course. In my opinion the only way to go.

I contacted Dale and just received a packet in the mail. He does offer a home study course. In the packet it does say that you are able to submit video tapes for review and can submit a final tape showing everything learned. I am not able to take off the time needed to go physically across the country to a school since I run my own business here. (Besides, my wife would kill me.) I am looking for something to help increase my skills and this looks like it would fir the bill greatly. I would suggest contacting Dale Salwak for more info.

You know, the next step in this is using webcams for live interactive online teaching. A lot of univerisites do this now and the grades are up from the classroom setting.

While I was growing up and learning magic, I actually lived in Michigan. For years I had heard of this Chaves School of Magic, but it took a long time before I found any 'written information' on it. From what I remember I had only heard of one place this could be learned and that was in Hollywood. If I would have ever known this was right around the corner I would have begged my mother to help me get into this.
Im currently in the military and constantly going from here to there and back again so at this present time I would possibly be able to do the Home Study Course, but does anyone know the fee for this? I remember being young and reading something in the 10's of thousands for the ACTUAL course... and a couple thousand for the home study course...
...for the 51st time... that is NOT my card...
