I'm gonna have a brief performance at a college next week. It's a 20 mins act. I've never performed before young audience at this age. Here's my idea about the routine:
- Open with some simple psychological test. - Follow by the "Korosuke" (spell?) where the mentalist spot out a person who has the black rock. - End with my bank night routine including a prediction of the bank note serial. Any one have any experience for this kind of audience please help. Thanks |

My friend, you have picked a tough audience. If you entertain them they are a fabulous audience. They are bright, articulate, analytical, and participative. Many are great entertainers too! Control the stage! (Avoid “open mic”.)
Best wishes for your success! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Toughest audience you will play to as far as I concerned. They will let you know if they are not entertained.
Go visual. Floating table, blindfold with comedy, Q&A... don't do a bunch of meterial that relys on credibility, as in 20 minutes, you will really have none. Comedy is a plus. Good luck with this. |

I've done a lot of colleges and this season I will be doing a lot more...I love the college audience.I guess being the same age as most of them I can just have the craic and can relate.I don't take myself so seriously.Though I have found out the hard way that pieces which rely on large amounts of dialogue can get a little lost though such pieces are not impossible to carry off well(Im learning)
Are they a tough audience..well yeah I suppose so,I mean if you come off as a smug **** then they will voice their opinion on the fact.Interact, have a chat during the show, move away from the script, comment on their school,on them, throw a few tongue in cheek slags, poke fun at yourself, thinking about the pacing, engage(like any other show). When you get someone on stage listen to what they have to say and react to what they say.Have a laugh with them, their friends in the audience will love it.Be prepared to be a little cheeky(I don't do blue humour)I guess what Im trying to say is keep it an interactive piece(even more so than usual) Be prepared to change things as you go along, read the crowd, gauge their interest levels... I guess bottom line as in every show you do...you gotta be likeable. In my show Im a touch of a rogue, confident but poke fun at myself along the way.You know they may be college students but please and thanks buddy goes along way. Im working on a memory piece where the story is about college..its funny but its something people can relate to....maybe think along similiar line. A lot of colleges employ hypnosis shows here because its visual, funny, gets everyone involved(nearly always knows someone who got hypnotized)People love watching their mates up on stage in front of everyone.Keep that in mind...Dont make the show soley about the effcts or about you, make it about the volunteers..I do a first kiss piece that is technically simple but when I reveal details about her first kiss the place usually goes wild...its about knowing the impossible, knowing the personal details..allowing the audience to learn more about their friend.Gives them something to talk about after. Great audience, hard work but very rewarding.Have fun, either ways it will be agreat experience. |

Here's a little cold reading you can do:
Pull up a girl in a sorority swetshirt and say, "I'm sensing that your close female friends are very important to you and that you frequently enjoy beer with a group of boys your own age. There's something inportant to you hanging up in your room. It's made of wood an dit has some writing or letters on it. The letters are not in English, but in some classical language." ;-} |

Peter's advice is spot-on, in my opinion.

Much luck with the show...you are going to need that...
and since you post this thread a week before the show...I personally think that it's too late to design/Write/improve your show....it is much better if you do that (writing/designing your act) months before you had a Gig like this... then after your Raw act is ready...you should go out there and rehearse it in front of an audience...and its NOT for your paying audience/Client... you could approach a club or a place where they had people in it...and in exchange for a minimum fee or Dinner, they allow you to perfrom there regularly...to work to refining your material... so when a REAL paying GIG like this is coming...you are 100% ready....and NOT Risking your Reputation and Credibility in front of the people who Book you...so basicly you can NOT test your Act in front of a Real Paying Client...you only deliver something that you know will entertain and amaze them.... if you test a material for a real paying audience/Client...then it's FLOP and Fail to Entertain them (let alone amaze them)....you might not get invited back for their next events Hope it helps |

You selection of Kurotsuke and bank Night are excellent for this group. I do a version of these in every show I do. You will do fine, 20 minutes is short enough that they will be hungry for more.
