David Copperfield is launching his new world tour in Malaysia beginning Oct. 30. The tour is called "World of Wonders". Official news story below:
star-ecentral.com Any thoughts/comments on what the new show could include? Rumors on the official DC forum report that it may be a 'Best of' show combining his most impressive illusions from the past 25 years. But, some new illusions will be cool too. Either way, I expect nothing short of the best from David. -Sean |

I did find this line from the article of interest “Copperfield's magic and illusions without the aid of camera tricks or visual effects have thrilled billions of people around the world” do you think it has anything to do with the growing knowledge of CA and his use of camera tricks?

Well, the article is written by a Malaysian writer. During translations, stuff can always come out sounding weird.
But, I do find the mention of camera tricks/visual effects weird since David mostly performs for live audiences in which this comment would not apply. Criss Angel, on the other hand, is viewed as someone who performs mainly for TV audiences in which the subject of camera trickery could be brought up. |

I've seen Copperfield live twice. Both times something went seriously wrong with the show and he was able to keep the show going despite. Really made me respect him a lot more as a performer.
The first time, the curtain wouldn't open, so he was waiting for several minutes in front of a blank curtain while they fixed it. He was able to keep the audience entertained quite well for the whole time even though his whole next illusion was hiding behind a big curtain. The second time I saw him, the projection screen broke and was dangling from the rafters by one cable, tilted at a good 30 degree angle. He just told the projectionist to rotate the camera, made a joke about M. C. Escher, and went on with the show as though nothing was wrong. |

It just shows what a great performer David really is. He has the real ability to create something out of nothing and to somehow finesse any problems/errors away to the point of entertainment for the audience. This is the ultimate goal of a performer: to entertain. David can do it when least expected, and even entertain more if a problem arises than he would have done if the show went perfectly well. Sort of a bonus for the audience who had to experience the problem.
David is the essence of a true performer and I wish him best of luck with his new tour. I can't wait to see it. |

"World of Wonders" doesn't sound like David. But it must be great like everything he does.

Is this topic about Davids new show or are we discussing camera-tricks here?
I shot a 30 min. special on David Copperfield last year in Vegas and I know from Chris Kenner that the next show is going to be amazing. D.C. Disappering Inc. prepared over two years for this and hard work went into it. At times David went to his warehouse after his last Vegas show that ends around midnite to research and develop it, at times staying up until 3 or 5 AM. He is truly the hardest working Illusionist in this business. Personally I didn't like his last (current) program (like many others) and I wish him the best of luck for the new one. All I can tell you is (can't say more) that one of his newest Illusion involves a giant step-ladder and incorporates a brand new concept never seen before. Now what the camera-trickery is concerned; there is in my opinion a 'fine line' where a certain camera move or edit has to be done in order to protect the performers trade secret for the tv audience. Unfortunately there is a misunderstanding of it, especially by people who never recorded their performance on video. I just shot my promo video for a tv channel in Europe and you can read my experience here at the caffee under Lights...Camera...Action. Feel free to PM me on that. I glady help out and answer any questions you might have.

Imagine you EARNED your way to the very top of the magic world and some guy comes in and steals that spot with a bunch of camera tricks. More people know of Criss Angel these days than Copperfield. Copperfield performed his way to the top and most likely resents someone passing him with camera tricks. Yes... Copperfield used camera tricks in the past but made a decision NOT to do that anymore and only do live performance... then the camera tricks come back to haunt him big time. LOL How would Tiger Woods feel if Happy Gilmore had more respect in the Golf world??? LOL David didn't mention Angel by name but I'm guessing the mention of edits were aimed in that direction. BTW... where is a NEW show mentioned. The article has a different name for the show but I didn't see the word "new illusions" in there. Best, Tim |

We can all, hopefully, infer that it will consist of illusions that are not currently being performed in his current "Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion" tour. Whether the change of illusions will include new illusions, I'm not sure. It could be a 'Best of' tour showcasing his best illusions from the past 25 years. But, I think that we can infer that some type of change in his illusion set will occur. |

Interesting how his website has the same look it's had for years. And according to his website, the only place he's performing for the rest of the year is at MGM. I would think if there was a new world tour on the books, it would be highly touted online.
I really love watching David work. I believe he's the most gifted storyteller we've ever seen onstage. Now, that being said, if you want to get really technical, David does use some form of camera tricks. Anyone who has seen the Hawaii illusion a few times will agree there is some very special camera work done there to "prove" the illusion. In this case, I believe that is fine. The illusion looks the same whether you saw it on TV, or live in a theatre. |

According to his Tour Schedule on his website, there is nearly a month gap between 10/17/07 and 11/15/07. During this time, he is scheduled to perform in Malaysia, yet his website does not mention it, but we do know that he will be performing during this time. So, already, his tour schedule is not revealing everything. Plus, Copperfield and his crew has not OFFICIALLY announced his new tour, yet. This could be the reason why it is not on his tour schedule yet.
Anyone with more information, please post. |

He needs to get back into the large illusions. Lets hope this is what he is doing. That is a very strange name for a Copperfield show..
We hope for the best. |

I hear ya Timothy. Yes, it was only a matter of time. Love the Tiger Woods, Happy Gilmore example. Freakin' hilarious, but true. I think CA's use of camera tricks is the result of trying to take magic to the next level and not being able to. I don't know what went down in those initial meetings, but I imagine CA's management team said, "Well Criss how can you surpass Copperfield? He's vanished monuments, trains and flown live thousands of times." "On top of that, he's well-spoken and captivating to watch" "Well look, let's just fake it till we make it. Okay" "I mean even if we pour millions into expert consultation, we can't surpass things like a vanished and levitated train car in one continuous shot!" "So, here, let's just have you go under this trash can and will make bumpy camera movements so it looks "Real" with LOTS of cut aways" "We can go legit later, once you're on the map kid."

Angel is a household name now (on the map as you say ) and will easily slide into a long live run with the Cirque show where people will soon forget the camera edits. The media that is his best friend now will someday turn on him and expose the edits but by then nobody will care because he is doing the live show. Angels " milli vanilli" moment won't affect him but it will put a damper on live magic performed on television for a long time to come. Best, Tim |

I don't remember "camera tricks" in most of the early Copperfield stuff. There were angles (critical ones) not explored with roving cameras, to be sure, but I always figured that was okay--because an audience in a real-life situation wouldn't have been allowed to rove all over the stage.
Now, understand, it's been awhile since I've looked at the VHS tapes I have of Copperfield stuff...and I missed taping (or even seeing) the one where he flies over the Grand Canyon. As I've mentioned here before, I used to produce film and video programs (and still do one every other year or so, just to keep my hand in), so I recognize a camera trick when I see one. Maybe I'll go back and look at those old VHS tapes. I'll say this: I love watching Copperfield work--on camera or onstage. I've sat in the audiences of his various live shows on three separate occasions. I've watched Angel on the air exactly twice--spotted the camera cheats and decided I wasn't interested any more. ANYBODY can be a magician with camera tricks. |
