Some of you have been in contact with me about Ted Lesley, and have asked for an update on his condition. I was in Berlin last week, and called him. He was not doing well. He was very confused as to exactly where he was, and none of his friends there seemed to think he was going to maket it out of the hospital. I planned to visit him; however, I caught a horrible cold and decided that since he was having problems that might be exacerbated by this, I would opt to give him a phone call.
I left Berlin very worried about Ted. According to Braco, Ted cannot walk any more and is wheelchair bound. Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Borodin. Ted has developed emphysema. That's the bad part. The good part is that it looks like he will be leaving the hospital in about a month and going into rehab. So, the old boy may be down, but he's not out. He asked me to post this at the Café, because he knows that many of you here are friends of his and that you have been asking and thinking about him. I'll keep you posted.

Ted is one of the most interesting people I have ever known. He is generous to a fault. He is also more than willing to give proper credit where it is due. This is one reason I get so livid when people appropriate his material without giving it a single thought.
When Ted took the lecture to Fort Worth, Art Emerson was not there to introduce him in person, so he had a recorded intro, instead. I thought this was a lot of trouble to go through for anyone. The basis of this introduction was not just that Ted was a great performer, but also that he had asked Art for permission to publish the Ted Lesley version of The Pegasus Page, which is known as "The Sough of Horse's Wings." In a business where knockoffs are so prevalent, Ted's request was a breath of fresh air. Also, when Ted did the videos that are sold by L&L, he was definitely hindered by Parkinson's. Yet he performed his show as if nothing was wrong. This was what led to the shambling gait that was so roundly criticized by one or two of the fault-finders. I challenge any of them to try doing Ted's act unimpaired. I also challenge them to get through the day with even half the Parkinson's symptoms Ted had at the time. I could write a volume about Ted's faults. But I could write an encyclopedia about his good qualities. The best thing about Ted is that he is one of those "industrial strength" Germans. He may be battered, but he isn't beaten. And that's one of the things that makes him Ted. I'm sure he will appreciate your kind thoughts.

Many thanks for the update. I just watched the Caberet Mindreading DVD once again and wondered about his progress.
I can only hope that I could do as well with the health challenges. All the best, Ted. Try to avoid bending the vials and glassware. |
