I have done magic workshops before, but never a mentalism workshop. After I perform my mentalism show in a high school I was thinking about teaching a small mentalism trick (the only problem is I can not think of any cheap or small ones). I might teach a magic trick instead. I am sure the students will like it. When it comes to a corporate event, there will be no workshop period.

You can't think of any impromtu ones?

Stick with the magic. No one cares if you expose it to a bunch of kids. Start exposing mentalism and you'll have a problem

Dyno-
Open any beginner's magic book. As many people have pointed out, almost any magic trick can be presented as 'mentalism.' Use your imagination to create a 'mentalist frame' around something you already teach. |

Psychological tricks play well with students as they can take them home and fool their parents or friends. A psychological ploy or trick also gets over around the high schooler who has learned just enough magic to be dangerous when you try to teach them something. Done well, this approach can both entertain the students and teach them something (in a non-educational way) about human behavior or sensory experience.

I never of an illusion Gotama. Maybe it will work. It helps protect mentalism and magic. But the illusion must be powerful. If not, they high school students are going to "boo" me.

Mike, This is serious straight up advice.
Not that I am advocating you to expose anything,............ But If you cannot come up with an inexpensive routine by simply using three index cards or envelopes or pieces of paper, then you really need to rethink where you are at as far as representing as a mentalist, and hit the books a little harder. This is really an indication that although you seem to have the will, you are just not ready and will do yourself more harm than good. Be patient, Black

The two stongest motivators are "Fear" and "Faith." I see you are riding "fear," I'm on the other road with "faith. Are you quoting "Donnie Darko"? I think it's a great movie, but perhaps not the best source of lifestyle advice. As to Mr. Black's observation, your response seems to suggest that his point is valid. Are you qualified to teach a mentalism effect to these students? That's not intended as a snipe; if you are not up to the task, you will produce an audience of how many mutants ruining the trick "the magician guy showed them". Is that the service you wish to render to the art? |

No John, I heard the quote from Denis Waitley.
I think you are misunderstanding me. I am not saying I do not know of any simple mentalism tricks to teach. But it is what Slim King mentions above, "Start exposing mentalism and you'll have a problem." Every little mentalism trick feels strong to me. It would feel like I am breaking the code no matter how simple it is. That is why I like Gotama's idea, teach an optical illusion instead. |

I want to help you in the spirit of "magicians helping magicians." Here is your initial post. I have numbered each segment for convenient reference and analysis: Quote:
On 2007-09-06 07:44, Dynamike wrote: Here are my comments specific to each numbered segment: 1) Ask yourself why you want to "start" giving mentalism workshops, or even just this one. 2) Why teach anyone anything after you have performed a MYSTERY ART? The object of your performance is to entertain with mentalism, not educate about how to perform mentalism, even if your venue is a high school. Educating them about other things INCIDENTAL to your mentalism show is different, but giving them a workshop ON MENTALISM is inappropriate, in my opinion, and is exposure. 3) IF, and that is a big if, you feel that you must "give something away" to your audience (possibly out of your lack of confidence that you will have "given them" enough by entertaining them and performing so competently), then you should be able to come up with something right off the top of your head. If you cannot, then you are not yet an accomplished* mentalist. This is where I agree with Sebastian, who put it more delicately than I. 4) What is the point of teaching a magic trick instead? Because you are more familiar with that? Is that a good reason to teach it after a MENTALISM show? Again, must you give them more than your performance? Wasn't that MORE THAN ENOUGH? If not, something is wrong with your show. 5) The teenagers may or may not "like it," but how do you know if you have no idea what you are going to teach them? In this age of YouTube, they may NOT like it in comparison to other "tricks" they've watched. 6) No workshop after a corporate event? - YOU HAD BETTER NOT. That is outright exposure, unless it is a "throw-away." As much as I dislike "aiding and abetting" disclosure, I feel that you need concrete examples of mentalism "throw-aways." They cost nothing and won’t be used by professionals, so it won't hurt anyone's livelihood or image to teach them. Mathematical throw-away: Think of a number between 1 and 10. Multiply it by 9. You should have a two-digit number in mind now. Add the digits. THE NUMBER YOU ARE NOW THINKING OF IS 9. Divination throw-away: You can divine the color of a crayon given to you behind your back. (If you don't know how to do this, PM me for it). There are a zillion more (approximately). Hope this helps! :D Arnon *Note that I used the adjective "accomplished" rather than "professional" because any paid performer is in some sense a professional. |

Mike, I wanna cut and paste below a post YOU made yesterday:
"Does any one add a workshop after they are done performing? I tried it before, but it is not my style. I stick with the hour magic show." I cannot understand why you posted this if you are planning on a mentalism workshop?! Sebastian Black gave you great advce, but you threw it back in his face. It was less than a year ago you began getting into mentalism and now you are out there suggesting potential workshops on it. My honest advice would be to find and stick to one aspect. Either magic OR mentalism. To do a mentalist show and then teach a magic trick will weaken your perception from an audience's POV. If you call yourself a mentalist (which I think is very premature) then please, why do you have severel avatar images of you performing magic illusions? Also why would a mentalist spend so much time in the "polly wants a cracker" forum??? Surely you can see why so many people are unsure? To your credit you took a lot of stick from people when you wanted to learn about this artform and kept coming back. You have obviously took onboard some advice re: material and literature but you like so many others have so much more to learn...Im learning new apsects every day! don't rush into things, keep your head down and absorb like a sponge, don't forget to put into practice what you pick up and if you fail, try again Remember vader in ESB..."The force is with you, young Skywalker, but you are not a Jedi yet..." Ill be interested to read your response, but would be more impressed if there wasnt one

Show them how to do a Hindu shuffle force to force the bottom card and then reveal it with a mentalism twist. That was the first thing I taught my nephew and he blew his mom away - and he's such a ham, he really embelished it with the same gestures and puzzled expressions I give when I'm "trying to read their minds".
Reminds me how careful you have to be around kids - they don't miss ANYTHING. |
