My question is how long does your standard show run for? And if you have various shows to offer, how long do they go for? I am talking about parlour setting shows in particular.
I have just reached the 30 minute mark but soon it will be a good 50-60 minute show when I receive my Passing Water, make up a set of razor blade swallowing, and add a bill to anywhere routine. Slowly building on my time.

I find 30 to 40 minutes is about as long as I can guarantee the audience's complete attention - especially the younger ones -- so I don't go much over that. Always leave them wanting more.

Christopher Lyle, thanks for sharing. Your site is great! And thanks for the comments guys. I don't want to over-run my show timewise. It could be a good idea to omit some of the less strong effects and replace with new better ones. And keep the show 30 - 45 minutes.

Solid 17 minutes when I did comedy clubs as the middle act. Years ago at The Magic Cellar I had two 30-minute sets (audiences would stay for both shows). I've lectured for two hours.

All these comments are very good. My shows, depending on the audience range from 30 to 45 minutes. If I am contracted for an hour, I allow audience members to pet the rabbit and look at the birds for the remainder of the time. The point of it is that they are entertained.

I once knew someone who offered a 30 minute show and a 60 minute show. The 30 minute show was $200 and the full hour was $350 (a better value). The only difference in the show was the last 1/2 hour he'd let the kids pet the rabbit and birds...much like you just described Stageonstreet.
Ok...so here's the deal with that! It's a SCAM!!!!!! Personally...if I pay for an hour of magic, I better get an hour of magic! I'd feel like I got taken if I paid an extra $150 thinking the show was going to be an hour and then 1/2 way thru, the show ends and you let the kids play with your animals for 30 minutes (or 15 in your case). Letting the kids pet a bunny and a bird ISN'T MAGIC. If I were your client, I probably wouldn't pay the extra $150 for it. If you advertise a 60 minute magic show...then do a full hour. If you don't have that much material in your act to support a full hour...then don't say you do! I question your ethics here Stageonstreet...there's a big difference in entertaining the audience and ripping them off!

The answer depends on the audience/buyer. Remember that unless you are doing a full evening show...shorter is always better. Eugene Burger has some very sage advise about this. Often even the folks that hire us don't really know what they want. They think they know but don't understand some of the dynamics of the evening or event they are trying to successfully plan. The old adage is "leaving them wanting more" and its really good advice.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Birthday - 45 minutes to an hour depending on if balloon animals are involved afterwards.
School shows - 45 minutes. Daycare show - 30 minutes. Really young kids (3-4yr olds) about 30 minutes or a little less. |

Nearly every show we have has been created modularly. Routines can be easily added, taken out, and re-arranged while still keeping the flow of the show. This allows us to adjust the running time as need be. Most of our shows run 45-50 minutes. we also do 90 minute illusion shows and 30 minute school shows. All of these shows can be altered to run in almost any time frame. Being able to be flexible with all your show times is a great asset, and I encourage you to look into it.

I'm really glad to read this... I've felt bad for a long time because I try to avoid going beyond 45 minutes. I've noticed too that keeping the audiences attention beyond that is tough.
45 minutes is basically an hour TV show without commercials... |

The opening act, or MC in a comedy club does from 15 to 20 minutes for $20 to $50. The middle act does 30 minutes for $100 to $200, chump change for a Friday, and Saturday night booking, and there are fewer comedy clubs every year. Scottds80 My shows are 45 to 60 minutes long depending on how many laughs I get. Sometimes I only do 30 minutes by request, but my price never changes. My tricks may change slightly depending on the age of the audience, but basically I only have one show that features my best stuff. I don't care how many people are in the audience either, I try to get as high a fee as possible for every booking, my marketing strategy is simply KISS. Al

Al it depends on the club buddy. The Funny Bone does not pay as bad as you say. Neither does Punchline, or the Ice House. For that matter Zanies.
Yes many of the one night clubs pay like crap. Most are simply stages in bars and I hardly consider them clubs anyhow. As for time, yep dead on right, a 30 minute middle is standard depending on if they use an MC or not. Fewer and fewer clubs, oh Lord am I happy to not be doing them any more! They are in a downswing for certain.

My Swing Magic show is 45 minutes, but is modular and can be shortened to fit shorter time restrictions.
I have a 30 minute formal close-up show AND I am currently developing a new contemporary BDC show that will also be 45 minutes, but modular. Modular is the key. All of the routines can work together or by themselves... |

Al, I am the same way by the way. My price is my price. I don't want to start a heated debate about it, but I am with you for sure on that.
