Hi,
Well, I'm some fool who bought some Chinese coin from MJM Magic. Not the website, but the coin quality is not good. I bought the one produced by Royal Magic. The ink comes off and there are scratch marks on it. And dropped, the coin's edge is spoiled. It's a bad Chinese coin. Where do I get a Chinese coin that the professionals use? |

I want the black ones, but can't seem to find them. BTW, can eBay be trusted?

The Magic Warehouse has some nice Chinese coins. I have several Johnson Chinese coins, and they look great. They are also easy to polish. On eBay, I check their feedback comments when deciding if I want to do business with them. Out of almost 50 purchases this year, I only had problems with 3 of them. All of those were because of slow shipments.

I have a question..... Are the Chinese coins replicas of real money, and is Chinese money really that hard to get hold of, and why? I do have a small, very real looking Chinese coin that is about the size of a nickle, but I have no idea where I got it!
As for coins with a hole in the center I really dig the African dimes, but it would be nice to have easy and inexpensive access to a cool brass colored coin the same size as the US half dollar! |

Hey, Mick, you might reach out to Larry Barnowsky here on the forum about all this. He's pretty knowledgeable about coins in general, and probably has the biggest stash of Chinese coins on this side of the world... His coins are actual currency (or once were), but a lot of the Chinese coins you see that are out there in effects are not real currency at all. Also, the good Doctah reserves these coins as added gifts to those that buy his books or win his contests here on the forum. They are nice coins, and many here have them as tokens of Larry's appreciation. He's a pretty good guy.
Anyway, like the colored Chinese coins are just decorative coins of no real value except for what they can sell them to you for. Most are just brass cut coins with some Chinese-looking emblems on them, and nobody usually knows what the heck they mean... I was in a Chinese fast food restaurant once and was waiting for my quick order of a half-chicken w/fried rice ($3.50) when I began showing the some tricks to one of the workers there. He loved the magic and wanted to see the Chinese coins, naturally. I asked him about them, and he immediately said they weren't "real," that pretty much they were worthless pieces of metal that he saw no use for besides the good magic I showed him with them. Anyway, there used to be a guy that made these coins in half dollar size and dollar size with a special milling on the edges that allowed for anyone to be an expert at classic palming a coin instantly. I have a couple, but he went out of business. The coins are very nice with nice deeply etched symbols, the recognizable hole in the center, etc. To me, they were the best ones I ever saw of this genre.

You might want to try Magic Dream.
I bought mine there when I was in France, and they are the most beautiful Chinese coins I have seen. They look just like the ones Johnson used to make, BUT I was able to get some dollar-sized! For those of you who have Kurtz's videos, you know what I mean. http://www.magicdream.fr http://www.magicdream.fr/plus.php?nbprod=220 I think this might help. Corey |

They are beautiful, but they cost so much money. I wonder why? They are not even silver.
I wish themagiciancoins was around, he had beautiful coins in all sizes and very reasonable prices. Thanks for the link, Spydur. Wu. |

Todd Lassen has recently released some very nice looking Chinese coins. http://www.toddlassen.com/mec.htm
I really wish I could find a 5 inch Chinese coin where the back side looks similar to Johnson-style ones. It's too bad Todd Plaster stopped making these. Mr. Lassen, unfortunately, isn't making them either. - Frank |

Jaz, that's the one I bought, which is from Royal Magic; very bad quality.

I, too, have been looking for months for Chinese coins with a square hole, not a round one. Daytona Magic had one made somewhere in Mexico, but it looks like they're not available anymore... If somebody has any idea?

I got mine from themagicwarehouse.com. It's good enough.
Dude, why don't you just get them from the Feng Shui shops around in KL? I managed to get some last time in Midvalley. |

The Ton Onosaka coins that I mentioned earlier are in black. The quality of these are great, and you get a well fitting sh... coin, as well as the DVD of Bobo doing his routine, which he teaches as well.

Certain routines you will need thin coins, others not so much.
To perform Curtis Kam's Beijing Coins Across, you need thin, Feng Shui types which you can find in any WalMart for about $3. When I want a better sounding coin for a routine like Kurtz's "Misty like a Dream", you need the heavier coin. I have some of the magician's coins, which are, sadly, no longer available. For the thicker coins, I don't like the design on the back of the Onosaka coins. Some of the other coins you will find are not the exact diameter of a dollar coin, which presents a problem when working with stacks. If I had to buy these coins now, I'd probably go with Todd. |

I sell the Johnson Chinese coins, and also there is a dollar size to match the half ones. They are called the Hong Kong Coin. Let me know if you have an interest in these. The Hong Kong Coin comes with a shell.
