Maybe this topic has been brought up before, I'd be surprised if it hasn't...Has anyone ever experimented with printing onto blank Bicycle cardstock, or printing their own custom cards like that? if so, what equipment do you use/suggest?
Thanks very much in advance! |

Hi AmazingA,
Do yourself a favor and make two small investments. 1. The Gaff Factory by Craig Matsuoka ( http://www.google.com/base/a/1577887/D12030218218360441426 ) 2. Versatile Monte & Beyond by Mark Allen ( http://www.theambitiouscard.com/mSearchR......GO=GO%21 ) Best of luck! |

Also - a lazer jet is OK but you have to give the card a light "sanding" with fine sand paper to remove a bit of the gloss.
works for black cards only - obviously

Caj, I read somewhere here on the Café that jewelers cloth, or emory cloth could be used to lightly sand the cards. Have you tried this? As of yet I haven't tried this.

I am sure it will work - it is easier though to go to home depot and spend 50c for some 0000 fine sand paper

What about taking the finish off with Acetone? How do you think that works?

Acetone works fine. I do it all the time. Just make sure the card is dry before you print on it. Spray a couple of light coats of Krylon's "Workable Fixative" after the printing is dried. That will give the card a decent finish. I am still using cards that I made 2 years ago (fairly heavy use).

Jskalon, does using Kylon's Workable Fixative give the cards that satin finish? Also will it make the cards sticky or leave them smooth? In other words can you still do a decent Elmsley Count with them after applying the Workable Fixative?

EDH -
You can do an Elmsley, Flustration, anything. The cards are smooth. I have some non bike card packet tricks that stick. I am going to try applying the Krylon to those and see if that works as well. Jack

Jskalon, thanks for replying. One more question: do the cards dry smooth? Or do you have to "sand" the cards, as mentioned above, with either emory cloth, jewelers cloth or 0000 grit sand paper?
I will have to try this out. BTW is there a product number associated with the Workable Fixatif? Where can this be purchased? Thanks for your reply jskalon.

I never did any sanding. I cleaned the finish with acetone, let it dry, print, let it dry, spray the Krylon. The other thing I do if I only need a couple of cards for personal use, is to clean off extra jokers or add cards to make blanks. I buy blanks if I am doing something that I am selling. Here is the Krylon info: Krylon® Workable Fixatif 1306 This Krylon product is what I use for roughing spray: Krylon® Matte Finish 1311 Both of these were purchased at Hobby Lobby. I hope this helped. By the way, I see Jazz guitar as one of your interests. My main source of income is as a freelance drummer. I get to play a fair amount of jazz. Take Care! Jack

Glad to help. That's the beauty of the Café. I learn a lot here. Let me know how the printing turns out. Jack (I really dig Pat Martino and Paul Bollenback)

Ok...have this dvd...easy to setup the template and all....but I'm finding it VERY hard to print using my laser black and white printer. The heat from the printer MELTS the tape used in the template, and the cards have a lot of tape residue on them when I take them off of the template (that is, if they haven't ripped or peeled when trying to remove them).
VERY frustrating. This happens when I'm trying to make 2 custom sides on the card. I take off the finish with acetone on both sides before printing....I might want to try just one side first and see if that fixes it. One problem I am having which I can't figure out a solution for is that the toner isn't sticking 100% to the card surface. The blacks are coming out as dark greys, and the greys pretty light. Sometimes if I slightly (and I mean REALLY slightly) rub the printed surface the toner comes off (not completely)...which is so frustrating! Any tips from anyone who is using a black lazer printer? |

Update:
doing one complete side at a time definitely works!!! now to figure out how to get the toner to stick 100% and colour it as dark as possible (I usually go over the REALLY dark parts with a black sharpie) |

Be aware of HOW a laser printer works.
.... Now you could imagine that is not possible to print on a card with a solid black back. Or even a court card on the the side, which you not print on. Blank faces with red backs or blank backs or red spot cards as backs are more easy than other ones.

I know...but what I would like to do would be to print....say a 4 of hearts, but in black...so they look like spades at first glance. Unfortunately it doesn't print dark enough or with enough black to pull this off.

I bought a color laser printer thinking it would do a better job. It didn't print as well as the ink jet and was slower (at least that was my experience). So I went back to the ink jet.
