SPREADWAVE - MATHIEU BICH
Show a blank deck. Ask somebody to name a card (no force) Spread the cards... The name of the card is printed on the cards! No force. Easy to do. Video on CD - Handling "FISM" included. Deck specially printed + CD for Mac & PC + DVD Only in English! DEMO VIDEO http://mathieubich.free.fr/spreadwave/Bi......inLo.wmv DEMO VIDEO http://mathieubich.free.fr/spreadwave/Bich_Spreadwave_LO.mov FISM INVENTION AWARD 36.00 € --------------------------------- --------------------------------- Mathieu Bich is a French magician (http://www.mathieubich.com/). His method is very clever. You must practice a little bit before a clean result but it is a real killer!! I think it is not for close-up because you need place for spreading the cards. It is not very expensive for a such trick. |

I just have to say, this is an amazing effect.
There are some hoops to jump through, but all worth it in the end. It is refreshing to see creative original thinking. Nice job Mathieu. |

When I saw this at FISM, I thought it was the best effect of the entire convention. Now that I own one, my opinion hasn't changed. This is a stunning, baffling effect. The instructional DVD is excellent. And the method is so well thought out...you almost want to show the audience just how clever this is.

Any sleights involved? it looked like a lot of moves involved and I am a simple hobbyist--too hard for me?

The moves are very easy. There is only a small memorization that is needed. In my opinion I found this trick to be very impractical. It takes like 1 minute to reset the deck and its very annoying. Also Its very easy to screw up the trick. Its an ideal effect to perform on television or trying to get a new gig. You also need to have some patter or else the effect is boring.

I also found that the demo was boring.

I actually stopped the demo before it was over..

I stopped reading the above 2 posts half way through zzzzzzzzzzz.
This is a genius trick although not a quick wow opener or for table hopping. A one off special trick for the keen audience. The moves are very easy, but some memorisation is involved. It took me 2 watches of the cd supplied and I have ran through the trick about 15 times before I was fully happy with it. Reset is easy but takes a minute and can not be done in front of a spectator. |

It's sad that a lot of people are not making it all the way through the demo. I can understand, but so you get an idea of how it looks in performance, when I do it, from the time the spectator names a card to the time I spread the pack is about 20 seconds. Now, admittedly, I do work at a brisker pace than most performers, but that should give you an idea of how it can look. It is quite a shock for the audience when they see their card spelled out instantly.
If there's a downside, it is the re-set, but it's not really meant to be a table-to-table type trick. Re-set is easy, just a little time consuming (about 1 minute, but you can't do it in front of an audience.) Several years ago, I thought Guy Hollingsworth's Once Upon A Time was the most creative and ingenious (not to mention original,) effect/routine I had seen in a long time. I couldn't even begin to imagine how he could have come up with such a clever and unique effect and then follow that with an equally clever method. And, as an added plus, all the "work" is well within the reach of a novice. Well, those same thoughts and characteristics apply to Spreadwave. I can't imagine how Mathieu even came up with the designs on the cards to form words, much less in such a manner that 48 different cards can be easily and almost instantly displayed. It's not for everyone, but if you appreciate brilliant thinking, both effect wise and method-wise, it is worth anyone's study. And, it's reasonble (just don't buy it with the matching blank deck...you'll never use it anyway.) |

Have a look at his other items and his lecture notes. They guy is an artist. Between "Thinner" and his trick with the "stars" I just have to admire his work.
Enjoy!

I have been doing Spreadwave for almost a year now, and can re-set the deck in about 30-40 seconds, and, it CAN be done in front of the spectator, but I don't recommend it. If you know which packets have gone where, it is a case of finding the right seperation.
The trick is incredible, hence it won best invention at FISM. When I perform it, I talk about making sure that they realise it is a blank deck, however, it isn't totally blank, there are tiny marks which they might be able to see...at the end I said did you see the marks? They say no, I say 'Let me make them a little bigger for you'...then spread the deck. It is great as a head table effect at a wedding. If you hand the pack to the bride and groom and say the LAST effect is for them. Perform your routine, then get the bride to name a card, and the groom to name a card...if they name the same one (Which believe me...can happen!), play it up...if not, get them to choose...it proves they had a free choice of card, and in the end, it could have gone either way. You can tell them this is an important decision, and is their biggest decision since getting married only moments ago. It can be very fun and entertaining to see if they agree which card to go on or if they are stubborn and stick to the card they named (The guy usually caves in ) Or, you can get one to name the suit, and the other the value...etc, many ways it can go, it's a great trick! |

Great trick!
for magic conventions.. Where do you work? I can't think of a proper situation to preform this trick. You can do it onstage(unless you have cameras and a large screen behind you) and defently you can't do it walkaround or even table hopping.(at least not in Israel). But this is a beautiful effect and I suspect the method is even prettier. What do you think? Have fun ROi |

Why does roi_tau think this cannot be done walk around? Just because it can't be reset instantly? Or is there some other reason?

I think a good way to present this strong effect would be:
1 Classic force a card from a regular deck and have the spectator place the force card face down without looking at it. 2 Explain that you have a new deck that can determine a selected card - though you don't know how it works. A form of Perverse Magic. 3 Show the three printed cards in Spreadwave. 4 Ask the spectator to turn over the selected card. 5 Spread "Spreadwave" to show. Then shrug. You don't understand. I like this because as soon as the "selected" card is turned face up you can immediately spread Spreadwave. |
