I was going to do a review on the Harry Lorayne book I am currently reading. Instead, I decided to just do a review of any book he has written.
If you are like me, some books become boring rather quickly. I lose interest and my mind wanders. I do not get everything out of the book that I should. Enter Harry. He writes with a style that "captures" your interest. Every book I have read of his I get the feeling that he is in the room with me explaining it to me, just like two friends discussing something. Example: I hate math. I tried geting through several math books to no avail. I just purchased Harry's book "Mathematical Wizardry". I cant put it down! If you are new to magic, or a seasoned pro, I reccomend any of Harry's books. If you don't like books, preferring video or dvd instead as a learning tool, I urge you to pick up a Harry Lorayne book. |

Harry should be here any minute, guys. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I would be hard-pressed to name a Lorayne book that wasn't worth far, far more than what I paid for it.
I think, though, that the two books of his that have had the most impact for me are Close-Up Card Magic and The Memory Book. (Actually, ANY of Harry's books on memory would do about as well -- The Memory Book just happens to be the one I read first!) And The Memory Book's impact goes far beyond magic and deep into everyday life. That's not taking anything away from Reputation Makers (Memory Magic Square!), Quantum Leaps, The Magic Book, Epitome Location, the monumental collection that is Apocalypse, Star Quality... Part of what makes his writing work: he has an engagingly enthusiastic and distinctive way of speaking, and since he writes like he speaks... --Josh |

I contacted Harry here recently and he shipped me several autographed books. Nice guy to work with and he has put out a lot of great books.

When I was in college in the 70's, I actually telephoned Harry out of the blue (we'd never been introduced) to ask about buying some back issues of Apocalypse. He was gracious in the extreme: he invited me to his house, showed me the galleys for BEST OF FRIENDS, autographed a slew of books and magazines for me...basically treated me like a friend. It goes without saying -- I was touched and delighted.

Harry is the man...his books really got me started. His books were the first I could pick up and learn some great and practical card magic. I also called him a couple of years ago and he called me right back and really help me.

...and he was a real working pro. So many authors are armchair performers. Harry knows what'll work for real people. I just got his "Ultimate Collection".

If you don't have Close Up Card Magic you need to get it and study it. In fact you can buy it as part of the Harry Lorayne's Classic Collection. His writing style is clear and to the point. In his books you'll find material that you will actualy perform. Every book he writes has items worth the price of the book.

Harry Lorayne IS the man, I agree. He and Stephen Minch have a writing style that is so well done it is very easy to visualise the effect. I have every Harry Lorayne book except Afterthoughts, and I hope to purchase that directly from Mr. Lorayne.
In addition to his own books, I highly recommend his legendary periodical Apocalypse. This magazine stands head and shoulders with the great ones like Hugard's Magic Monthly, The Jinx, and the Phoenix, just to name a few. Mr. Lorayne's keen eye for great magic is readily apparent in this mammoth collection of 2880 pages of magic from a veritable who's who of Magic from the late seventies to the late nineties!! A tip of the proverbial hat to Mr. Lorayne. Magically, Vlad |

I blush!! HARRY LORAYNE.
Posted: Nov 10, 2007 10:17am PS: Many are trying to talk me into doing LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, VOLUME 2 - to be re-write, update, upgrade, etc., of three of my earlier books - REPUTATION-MAKERS, RIM SHOTS and AFTERTHOUGHTS. Sure, it'd be expensive compared to other books, but certainly not considering the content. Anyway, not sure if I want to do it, lotta work, etc. Need some feedback, what do YOU think? Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

Afterthoughts, especially is loaded with great material. (I still use the color changing deck routine regularly.) BTW: any chance of a reprint of The Personal Collection? It's the only one of your books I don't own, and I haven't been able to track down a used copy. (I'm especially looking for it to take a look at The Great Divide, which I've heard very good things about. Thanks!

Rimbaud: I have perhaps two slightly-damaged copies of PERSONAL COLLECTION left for sale. You'd be hard put to find the "slight damage." But - I've sold the last few at $130.00 (plus the inevitable pstg/hndlng) per copy. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

Mr. Lorayne,
I hope that you do consider this project. I am certain it is a lot of work, but I also believe the payoff would be great. The respect you have earned in Magic is legendary and well deserved. Also, I believe you are the BEST writer to show the DVD "visual learners only people" that the written IS more powerful and conducive to learning than mere visual media. After all, all the Masters - yourself included - learned from BOOKS! It is also a cost issue for these folks to consider: the money spent on DVDs from certain companies is a poor financial investment. Consider that many DVDs are one trick ponies and compare that to any book that offers more effects, the opportunity for the author to delve into subtleties of an effect; its blocking, psychological underpinnings and a host of other variables means more bang for the buck. There are few authors in the world of magic who never fail to disappoint. I know that when I see something with your name on it I am confident that I am getting a piece of work that leaves me with the delightful quandary of deciding which effects NOT to do! I can think of no higher standard for magic literature. In fact the only negative I would offer is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed in your works with the immense wealth offered therein. But Mr. Lorayne, this "negative" of which I speak is definitely a POSITIVE!! So, I implore you to keep overwhelming us!! The pain is exquisite!! Best, Vlad |

Thanks for the kind words, Vlad. Of course, you're absolutely right - there's no comparing the value of a book with, say, 130 or more audience tested and audience preferred effects and routines to DVD costs and content. (My own DVD 4-volume set excepted, of course!!)
King14: If and when, it won't be a "re-print," it'd be a re-write and update (some new thoughts, etc.) along with the two other books mentioned - in one large volume. I need more feedback, need to see if there really is lots of interest. The first volume of THE CLASSIC COLLECTION sold better than I imagined it would; just reprinted a large number. Need to know, or at least assume, that Volume 2 will sell almost as well. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.
