I already wrote this last night but the post seems to have vanished. Anyway the short version: Anyone developed a routine with McComb's half dyed silk routine where you don't go into pockets to do the dirty work and won't use sleeves or topit either? I read somewhere that it's possible with palmo ball but I really don't want to spend another 50$ to routine and new gimmick if it isn't really necessary.

Investing in your act is simply the professional thing to do. However, there are some small serving size children's plastic juice bottles that might get you by until you recognize the the need for the real thing. Another possibility is the bulb from a kitchen basting syringe.
Both are temporary solutions to a permanent problem for a pro. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Read what Billy originally used for his gimmick. I would think you make a gimmick out of about $1.50 in plastic pipe.
No going to the pockets, topit or sleeves. Gosh this sounds like real magic. I like just switching the tube in my coat. Don't run if you are not being chased. Grecco had a good routine using the invisible hand gimmick. Richard

Holdout would open some amazing possibilities indeed and I am really considering trying up one. Only problem is that you cant roll your sleeves up anymore. I also considered Rocco type sleeving gimmick "with something in arms to prevent stuff from falling out"

The sleeving gimmick you speak up is explained in Tommy Wonder's books.

I assume you have the McComb rt, otherwise my comments wont help much.
The reason for going to the pocket in the McComb rt to: 1) Switch the gimmick 2) Ditch the gimmick You can do a color change rt without performing the above 2 actions but it wont look anything like the McComb rt. You could do the above while giving the audience the impression you did not, though this would require some work and I don’t think it would add much to the rt. I also tried to get rid of the need to go into anything since I don’t usually wear a jacket. I realized to get the effect I would have to go into something so I ended up going into my suitcase. The holdout lock is explained in Wonder books however but it is pain to make I have tryed. I think I try the basic routine few times before I start to chance anything. After all, spectator see red and white silk separately in the routine after the switch is done. J-M |

A palmo can be used to do half dyed silk. I use it to music so therefore I do not use McComb's routine exactly, therefore I do not need to ditch a gimmick "Half way" thru the routine.
Looks more magical without a ditch & switch. You would have to experiment to see if doing his routine exactly would work. James
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

We have had McComb’s Half Dyed silk in our show for years. I have experimented a great deal with this routine. A palmo Ball can be used to perform some of the routine but not the entire routine ala McComb.
I have played with this routine for many years and I always come back to the original workings. The key is not to worry about the switch and ditch, but to properly motivate it. I have had other magicians voice their concerns to me over this apparent problem. It has to be remembered that this is not a manipulation routine. It is a scripted, sucker/comedy routine. If you are creative in your thinking you can instead of your pockets go to something else to make your switch and ditch. I have used a table to accomplish the same task instead of my pocket. I really believe that this routine is all about the script. What are you saying to the audience about the silks, why you are doing it, and why you show two separate silks during the routine. When you work out your motivation and scripting for the routine, then the “moves” become so integrated into the act that the “switch” and “ditch” are invisible. Christian & Katalina

I did it first time in my act last night infront of 100 or so audience with Basic McComb routine with switches in my pockets but with my own story and the reaction in the end when the silk was half dyed was literally: "OMFG! Get the hell out of here" In a good way I mean. It literally slayed em all and no one mentioned or even remembered going into pockets. I might still at some point try it some other way but it works like this like a charm as well.

Great job! This is the difference between entertaining and doing tricks.

I perform it allways as a middle piece. After some tricks, usually towards the end. Even before the last piece as a "Teach a trick" sort of thing. Its easy to get into it by explaining that people would usually like to learn these sorts of things I I might broke my magicians code and show em all a trick they can do to their friends. In my own mind I have very good routine for it verbally. Tegnically its pretty much identical to McCombs version but my pattern, or story, what ever you wanna call it is completely different.

Japanesse magician Kazu Katayama has a routine with the half dyed silk that looked to me like the McComb trick but as far as I could see he didn't go into any pockets or topits or sleeves.

Regarding performing this in a set!
Can we get away with 2 sucker tricks!!!!!! Would or does anyone perform McCombs Half dyed in a set then 10-15 mins later perform another classic like silk to egg which also gets huge reaction or would this not be as effective etc Love feedback/advice Cheers -Brent |

Personally, I think performign two "sucker" tricks in the same set is not a good idea.

I agree with Donald. I personally would never perform more than one sucker effect in the same show/set.

I have been thinking about this lately as well and I came into conclusion that you don't have to perform color chancing silk routine as a sucker effect. There is other ways to perform it as well.
