A reasonably priced facsimile of the Thayer/Owen version was produced by Klamm with nicely disguised retractable protruding nail.

BTW, I find it interesting that the original poster went from 20 years to 200 years of use of a Zombie gimmick principle. Also, Spellbinder missed on the things that made the Karson Zombie work. According to Mike Rose, the first Zombie balls were glass, then brass. Quote:

Bill,
You get the prize for the most polite euphemism I've ever seen used to describe the Klamm/Sommers product line.

I've met Bob Klamm. He is a nice man. I've never met Sommers. But I often wondered how he got away with it.
Then I remember that he didn't get away with his Zig Zag "problem."

Dirk Losander is a genius. I use the Excalibur Table. It is a perfect 10. The effect is well worth the practice. Mr. Palmer is right, as always, in saying, “Losander's table owes more to Tommy Wonder than to anyone else.” Losander received Tommy Wonder’s permission to use his “style” as a starting point. Dirk Losander has taken this effect to the level of being an excellent example of how it would look if it were real.

Regarding Dirk's initials. Mine are actually hand printed on the inside of one of the parts of the table.

George Proust of L'Academie de Magie in Paris produced a "floating" table based on a totally different principle.
The three legged small round table had a small (remote controlled) piston coming in and out one of the feet and the fact that the table had only three legs made it do very strange movements. The table's look was sort of antics. Very convincing. The only drawback was that it had an air circuit which had to be refilled from time to time with a bulky pump. The effect was really spooky. I think that I remember Joe Stevens importing some of them in the US This was presented several times by charlatans in serious (!?) spirit demonstrations on French television.

Wayne Rogers recommends you also avoid the Floating Table made by Net Magic of France which wholesales for 24 Euros.

I have seen photos of these. The "nice man" from France offered me a wonderful deal on these pieces of poopoo. These have to be the UGLIEST excuses for a knockoff table that I have ever seen.

If you put a DaVinci table and a Losander table -- ANY model -- side by side, you will see precisely why you should avoid the DaVinci. Besides, once it starts using the Zombie Gimmick, it goes into knockoff land.
Posted: Dec 25, 2009 12:04am BTW, I found a floating table method that is quite impressive, although it not only fools nobody, and it is seriously dangerous. Several years ago, I worked with a group of monks that made furniture. They had these wonderful tables that were made of heavy pine that came from the Sangre de Cristo mountains. This pine was as dense as maple. It used a tung oil finish that was almost completely waterproof. There was a flood north of here when the Trinity river overflowed its banks. One of our tables came floating down the river in the floodwaters. The table survived. It did make a rather heavy dent in a couple of spots along the riverbank, though. Difficult method to do anywhere but on location or at a few venues in Vegas.

Donrodrigo- I recall seeing the use of a ring to levitate a table in Herrmann's Magician's Handbook 1942. The illustrations show precisely the design of the ring and gimmicked table. The etchings were Alex or Carl Hermann demonstrating the effect and so cool I cut them out and had them matte and framed. The book was already yellowed and dog eared so I wasn't concerned with depreciating the value.

The Thayer gaff goes back further than 1942.

I have an Owen Table and it is the best, in my opinion. With two people on stage (one on each side of the table) as it levitates, it looks great. Plus it's totally "clean" with no gimmick to hide. Of course, like everything, it's all in the presentation.
