In some toy shops they sell a special bubble-liquid that becomes hard while the bubble is flying and you can easily grab the bubble between your fingers.
Also check out Finn Jon's fantastic routine with soap bubbles filled with smoke. |

http://www.stevensmagic.com is where you can get Finn Jon's great bubble work. Tom Noddy is one of the great workers, he lives in the Santa Cruz, Calif., area.
Stevens also sells a set of multiplying billiard balls sets that are clear glass....looking like bubbles. Fred Kaps has done a routine like this too.

I bought a cheap "solid bubble from real bubbles" trick a long time ago and found it not terribly convincing. That was probably in large part due to my handling, however.
More recently, I bought the solid bubbles stuff from World Market, to see if there was a way to use it in a magic act. Unfortunately, though the bubbles do turn solid, they stick to your hand (or whatever else they land on). So there's no rolling or bouncing or tossing possible. Just catch the (small) bubbles and "wear" them for a bit. The good thing is that they disappear entirely when they pop--just rub a bit and it's all gone. This recent resurgence of interest in bubbles was brought on, in part, by watching Ammar's thread DVDs. During the section on loops, he talks about blowing bubbles and controlling them with the loop. Then he mentioned Finn Jon, I believe it was, using smoke-filled bubbles and producing a white ball. He said it was one of the most magical things he ever saw. IIRC, he said the smoke was in the bubbles from the outset; a smoking cigarette tip inside of a hollow cigar that is used to blow the bubbles. Like some of the others in this thread, however, I would be interested in finding a way to use non-cigarette smoke, as I don't smoke and most of the people I know don't, either. I wouldn't want to do a cool performance only to end up with a smoke smell in their house/restaurant/whatever. Anyway, with all the links mentioned, there's bound to be something that looks good and that I could use. I'll have to look through them when I have the time. |
