For those of you who include "The Monster Hat" in your children’s shows, you know the impact it has on the kids. It’s Hilarious-especially with some of David Ginn’s ideas included.

If you do use the hat, do you have any "bits of business" that you feel are an absolute must for the show?

Any thoughts, opinions on this are appreciated!

Thanks!

I used to use David Ginn’s Troll Hunting schtick with the Bongo Hat, including the Texas Fly Swatter bit. I’ve taken it out of my show, but may be putting it back in. It either gets a big response or none at all. Ginn mentions how great the routine works for him so I decided to lift the whole shooting’ match to see if my spin on it was causing the problem. Same results -- either screams of laughter or a crowd of little faces quietly indifferent to the goings on.

Maybe I’ll go back to accidentally stabbing kids with the pin on the back of Chico the Chimp! That was quite a crowd pleaser! I didn’t realize how thin the little boy’s shirt was when I put the thing on his back, and he immediately began crying, arching his back and trying to reach behind him to stop whatever it was that was stinging him! I guess carpet tape is the way to go, eh?

The Bongo Hat is a good prop, but if the routine you’re doing doesn’t fit YOU, lose it! Just because it plays well for Ginn, doesn’t mean it will play well for everyone.

As far as the pin on Chico (or the firecracker or pizza oven, etc): you CAN use tape. However, it may fall off. go ahead and use the pin, just choose a kid with a loose sweater, sweatshirt or heavy flannel shirt, preferably with a t-shirt underneath. Which means you shouldn’t use it in outdoor shows in the middle of summer....

Of course, if Ginn's routine does fit YOU, DO IT! Just because it plays well for Ginn, doesn’t mean it won't play well for ME, TOO.

Give it an extra fold tinier - it will barely stay. Then tell the kid that to do the magic, he needs a magic hat. Put the teeny thing on him, and of course, it falls off. Tell him it needs to be bigger, unfold it once, and put it on - it will probably still fall off. Tell him (etc.) again ... and again ... you will have to do some surreptitious knocking-off to keep it falling, as it gets bigger. And, of course, the biggest unfold reveals the monster face.

I use it in my clown shows. It is an "American Idol" Fashion show between girls and boys. One boy and one girl come up and we go through four rounds with the Applause Meter determining who is winning. It's too close to call and on the final round the audience claps loudly for the girl with the big hat. I turn the boy to face me to give him a "pep talk" and then put the hat on him and turn him around. The reaction is awesome!

Samy Smith's DVD KIDology has a routine with the Monstor hat in it. He does it on himself because he ran into a situation with a child that had head lice in the past.
