Just wondering if anyone has any comments about this.
The Professor's Nightmare appears in many beginners magic books and also those online tutorials that can be downloaded. No doubt it is a great effect with numerous patter themes that can be used with it, it is good for childrens' magic as well as adult magic, packs small and plays huge. However, do you think too many people know the secret due to it's accessibility?

I use it in all my children shows, and quite a few adult shows. I never had a problem with people calling me out saying they know how to work it... They say that if it is in a book, it is well hidden, because nobody reads anymore...

A gimmick only becomes magic when it is placed in the hands of a magician. I have had people come up to me after my show and tell me "I know how to do PN, and you still fooled me" I not only love to do this trick, but when I do it in the round I challenge the audience to catch me.

I also think a LOT has to do with presentation. If you can make it interesting and enjoyable, it doesn't matter if people know how it's done. It's the entertainment gotten from seeing it again.
How can this be? Think about how many times you have watched a magic effect done by others, maybe at your magic club, and totally enjoyed it even though you knew how it was done. Heck, you might even do the effect yourself. To me, it's all in fun and being entertained for a few minutes. Mark. |

I agree that magic lovers may like to watch an effect over and over again, heck, I'd watch Lance Burton do his dove act a million times and would still love it. Lay audiences are not like that. They blurt out 'I know how its done!', 'There's a plastic bag in there!' etc. Quote:

It's all in the handling and presentation, natch. Our most beloved principles have been exposed time and time again but failed to make an impact. Why? Because the method is a means to an end, not the end itself.
Prof's Nightmare has a host of 'convincers' for the astute performer to find that keeps it at the top of the list of classics in my book.

If that is your experience I suggest you look into a different presentation, because it is all about entertainment value, and technique. Rope magic is a big part of my show, and I get OHH's, and AHA's from PN all the time. The snap knot is the perfect example of a trick that many magicians have avoided, because it is nothing more than clever, but if you do it the way Dennis Loomis does it you will have a knockout 5 minute routine that ends by doing it six times one on top of the other, when I do this routine I usually have my audience root for me hooting, and hollaring all the way through.

I use it at all shows as well, strolling, stand up, kids, corporate, trade shows.
I do do it a little differently, it is a between the fingers method taught to me by Bob Elliot many years ago. I have seen Charles Greene do it a Trade Shows as well. I do not know where Bob got it from.

I could be wrong, but I think Bob Elliot invented the trick, or at least made some improvements on it. I do not guarantee this to be a fact, because I'm only 21 years old.

Professor's Nightmare is probably the second most performed rope effect. I think Cut and Restored is the first. Laypeople seem to be perennially fooled by this. Most laypeople don't see a lot of magicians, and they do not necessarily demand "new material" even if they do. It's like going to a Tony Bennett Concert. The evening is not complete until he sings "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
I've done magic shows and had lay people come up afterwards and ask why I didn't do the trick with the "Rings." I use Professor's Nightmare a lot. It's in most of my shows except for performances for young children. They don't seem to appreciate rope magic. I wouldn't worry at all that a lay audience is going to consider it old hat. You might, however, want to leave it out if you do an act for a magic convention. Dennis Loomis

Tremendous trick that plays very well and when done as part of a larger rope routine series I don't think people, even those who know it, realize what it is.

As magicians, we think people care about the secrets more than they actually do. Lay people, for the most part, have a very limited exposure to magic of any sort. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I think a lot of illusions are exposed, and mst more easy to get the trick/secret.
All the magic boxes have the FP, but this accessory becomes magical at the hands of magician, not in the one of curious... Paulo |

I agree with photius that if you present it within a rope routine, people will be so caught up in the routine as a whole that they'll forget that they know how to do one individual trick. (And I honestly wouldn't think that too many people know how to do it.)

Just to echo every one I use PN in most of my shows and I love it. I add a move were I let go of one end and spin the ropes then do the same with the other end. People that know the trick from when they were kids always ask how do I do that bit (its just confidence).
I’ve rarely had people pick at it or ruin it and I ve used it a lot. It leads it self so well and is flexible how the trick works might be the same but how it presented is very different. Keep it out there
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
